THE funeral of former Port Vale and Goldenhill Wanderers player Ellis William Birchall will take place on Monday at Gateway Goldenhill Methodist Church (10.15am).

Mr Birchall joined the Valiants as an amateur in September 1944 and signed professional forms in April 1945.

The defender was friends with Valiants stars Bill McGarry and Tommy Cheadle, and was also a member of the Port Vale B team who won the Sentinel Cup in 1946.

They beat Stoke City 5-0 in the final in front of 6,500 spectators at the Old Recreation Ground in Hanley.

Mr Birchall died peacefully, aged 87, on January 20.

Relatives and friends wishing to attend Monday's service are asked to meet at the church. It will be followed by interment at Tunstall cemetery.
