PERRY Deakin, the former Port Vale director and chief executive, has been appointed stadium manager at Oxford United.

Deakin got the Vale job in March of last year, but resigned eight months later after a series of revelations about the running of the club under his stewardship.

He was serving out his notice when he was made redundant by the club's administrators last month.

Despite being mired in controversy during his time at Vale Park, the company who own Oxford's Kassam Stadium, the Firoka Group, have offered Deakin a quick route back into the game.

Port Vale Supporters' Club chairman Pete Williams, who led calls for Deakin and his fellow directors to be quit, reacted with disbelief to news.

"It is absolutely appalling and I feel sorry for Oxford's fans," said Williams. "The way he administered the Vale took us down and down."

Deakin, aged 48, angered Vale fans by suggesting he had bought a stake in the club worth £100,000 ahead of his election to the board.

In fact, he had been issued with "nil-paid shares", and never paid a penny for them.

Deakin and the former Vale board were also criticised for misleading supporters over the extent of the failed Blue Sky International investment deal, said to be worth £8.5m.

The Firoka Group, owned by former Oxford chairman Firoz Kassam, did not consult Vale's administrators before offering the post to Deakin.

"If they'd have contacted the club or the supporters' club, I don't think the reply back would have been too pleasant," added Williams.

“You don't have to take direct action yourself to try and understand why other people, rightly or wrongly, feel the need to do so. Some of those sounding off about Mr Deakin's new post are very angry because his unscrupulous and self-serving behaviour helped bring their football club to the brink of liquidation, so they want to bring this to the attention of others. Personally I prefer him in Oxford rather than in Burslem and leave it at that. However, if Mr Bratt had asked around for references a bit more widely, we may not have ended up with Jim Gannon as Manager last season. Checking with his centre half in the dressing room might have been a start; but what do players and supporters know?

Just think, if all those troublemaking fans had sat still and just handed over their hard-earned cash, we could still have had that nice Mr Bratt and his friends (including Mr D.) running (or should it be ruining) the Club, just about. Those protesters are, after all, just a "mob", albeit a "mob" that may have been proved right. Black and Gold Until it's Sold, wasn't it? Well, now it has been and, strangely, most people seem glad, even the name callers.”

    “laythevale,

    Another brilliant post.

"Pete Williams has done many good things for Port Vale."

I agree Pete Williams is Vale through and through and deserves respect for his efforts for the club.

I just wish he would think a lot more before he pipes up so he doesnt curl people's toes with embarrasment.

I'm looking forward to hearing what Mr Young has got to say about Mr Deakin but expecting a company to contact the Supporters Club for a reference for Mr Deakin just makes the SC look ridiculous.

Though I'm sure the Sentinel has also gone out of its way to make this look worse than it was intended.”

“I've never heard of this Deakin fella, but he won't be having much to do with our club.
It doesn't surprise me in the least that Firoz Kassams company have employed someone like this, just so all you Vale supporters know there is no love lost between us the OUFC faithfull and Firoz Kassam as the guy bleeds our club dry with the rent for that stadium.
Im hoping we can win our last two games of the season, get back in the play offs, maybe then get back to Wembley and win promotion too league 1.”

“British Hope - in thanking you for your kind words of encouragement to take a higher profile, you make my point for me. Pete Williams has done many good things for Port Vale. He has worked to generate funds for the Sproson statue (now sadly politicised by the mob as an anti-board totem) and is one of the few SC members who cared enough about the club to be part of it BEFORE Robbie Williams gave them £250k of shares to play with. Which is why he does himself no favours by descending to the level of a playground bully. You wouldn't have found Dave Felstead playing to the mob.

The job is already being done by those evil trolls who are, as we speak, bombarding Oxford United with hate messages - having missed the fact that he is being employed by another company entirely. One particular low life has already posted his mobile phone number on the Oxford equivalent of One Vale Fan, presumably in the hope that they will "make his life hell".

Are these the supporters that we tell the city's ratepayers they should featherbed? They are a blight on the name of Port Vale. If Perry Deakin has ripped us off, then there are civilised and legal channels to go through.

Sorry Keith - but we're not all like this. In fact 95% of us are good people.”

“Lets be clear, Firoka own the stadium and have nothing to do with the running of Oxford United, he will have to work with the football club in some way as tenants of the stadium, but I'm sure OUFC Chairman Kelvin Thomas knows all about him.”
