MICKY Adams is approaching the rest of the transfer market with at least one eye on the future.

The Port Vale boss, who has so far brought in three players during January, admits he's still trying to improve his promotion-chasing squad.

But he says some of his targets during the rest of the month could be players for the long term.

"We have fingers in several pies and we're looking at both the immediate future and also a few years down the line," said Adams, who has welcomed Chris Birchall, Darren Purse and Lee Hughes to the club since the window opened.

"There are a few out there that we are tracking and I've spoken to a few clubs about their younger players.

"If we can bring them in during the transfer window, then (chairman) Paul Wildes is quite happy for me to do so.

"I hope to get together a nice little development squad that takes the club forward and stands us in good stead for years to come."

Adams shares Wildes' vision for the future of the club.

"We're working with one eye on the future and that hasn't always been the case in the past," he said.

"The manager at this club has always worked for the here and now, so this is a new thing for me.

"I've been under pressure from day one to get this club out of the division and I've not achieved it yet. But that's the same for every manager at this level.

"I'm enjoying my time here and we've got a good chairman now.

"He wants to develop the club for the future and hopefully I'll be part of that."
