MICKY Adams has urged keeper Joe Anyon not to allow his leg-break horror to haunt him at Chesterfield tomorrow (3pm).

Anyon's season was ended prematurely at Saltergate on March 28 last year, when an accidental clash with striker Drew Talbot left him with a fractured tibia during the 2-1 defeat.

The 23-year-old is in line to make only his sixth start of the campaign after recovering from the injury.

Adams said: "I don't think going back there will be a problem for Joe.

"If we think Joe has got a problem mentally, then he won't play, but that will be my call.

"I'm not in this game for sentimental reasons, I want to win."

Anyon has re-emerged on the first-team stage after reclaiming the jersey from 19-year-old stopper Chris Martin.

His only blip arrived last weekend when his error gifted Northampton their second goal in the 3-1 victory at Vale Park.

However, he bounced back with a near-faultless display in Tuesday's 2-1 home win against Bradford City.

"Joe can be pleased with certain aspects of his game and he'll be disappointed with others – but that's the nature of goalkeeping," added Adams.

"Everybody will talk about the mistake against Northampton, and I suppose everybody was waiting for me to axe him. But I'm fair to the individuals in the dressing room. Chris Martin made a mistake at Lincoln City earlier in the season and I picked him for the next game.

"That's how you keep your dressing room and it's down to man-management – I'd like to think I'm half-decent at that.

"Joe will get better with the more games he plays."

Tomorrow's encounter will be the final time Vale grace Saltergate before the Spireites move into their new 10,600-capacity stadium next season.

Chesterfield are well-placed to secure at least a play-off place after winning seven of their last nine league games.

Their excellent run of form has left them fifth in the table, just one point adrift of the top-three automatic promotion places.

But manager John Sheridan will be without striker Jack Lester (knee) and defender Aaron Downes (knee).

Vale have a doubt over right-back Adam Yates (groin), while striker Geoff Horsfield (calf) and midfielder Dave Howland (knee) remain sidelined.

Vale are six points adrift of the play-off zone, and Adams said: "All the teams in the top seven will start to feel the pressure now and nerves will play a big part.

"We'll go there buoyant after a good win against Bradford and we'll give it A go. Chesterfield are pushing for automatic promotion – so it's a home banker isn't it?

"We've got to turn up because we've not done our job properly in patches during the recent games we've lost."
