A Brian Saah second-half own goal gave dominant Port Vale a point at home to Torquay.

The Valiants controlled play in the opening period and seemed certain to open the scoring when Torquay keeper Michael Poke made a mess of a high ball in the 38th minute.

Poke flapped as the cross dipped just under his crossbar and pushed the ball out to Vale winger Ashley Vincent two yards out.

However, the stopper did well to keep out surprised Vincent's shot and it was from the resultant clearance that the visitors took the lead.

Rene Howe drew the defenders as he carried the ball from the half-way line, then slipped in Ian Morris to slide a shot past Chris Neal.

Vale continued to pour forward, sending cross after cross into their opponent's box and winning a total 15 corners.

And it was from a Vincent cross from deep that Micky Adams's side found a leveller in the 69th minute.

Saah ignored a call from Poke that he was in no danger and diverted the ball past the hapless keeper into the net.

The defender almost put Vale in front five minutes later when he sliced a clearance onto the inside of his own post.

Tom Pope hit the crossbar with seven minutes left on the clock as Vale went in search of a winner.

But veteran full-back Kevin Nicholson cleared off the line following a scramble at the death to leave the home side having to settle for a draw.

Vale now sit seventh in the early League Two table, four places ahead of Torquay, who reached the play-offs last time around.

“great game!! (only heard it on the vale player) as i'm abroad but it sounded like we really do still need a powerful good striker.
Lets hope Liam Dickenson was watching and licking his lips!”

“The team played very well and it was an entertaining game as Torquay were a capable team as well. We created a lot of chances and should have won. It is possible to say we missed a lot of chances, but some credit is due to Torquay for good last ditch defending in their six yard box. But, sitting behind the goal in the first half Torquay's goal also lived a charmed life as chances that were falling to Vale players were made more difficult by knicks of Torquay players that could have gone anywhere but just took the ball away from the Vale player or made the ball rise off the ground to make it harder. I don't think I would blame our players too much for this. Of course Torquay's luck ran out in the second half with an own goal.”
