FATAL COLLISION: Tara Michelle Dawson.
The 16-year-old was taken to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire for treatment, but her condition deteriorated and she died from her injuries on Saturday.
Now officers from Kidsgrove are asking that anyone who saw the accident at 9.35pm on High Street, near the junction with Pennyfields Road, or has any information about it to contact them.
PC Ken Henson, from the North Staffordshire Road Policing Unit, said: "This is a very tragic incident and our thoughts go out to Tara's family at this time.
"A full investigation is currently ongoing to find out exactly what happened on the night of the collision and we urge anyone who saw anything to come forward."
Residents living on High Street were saddened by the tragedy.
One of them, Florence Allingham, heard the collision take place.
The 85-year-old said: "I heard a bang and a commotion outside. I went out and saw a young girl lying in the road. The emergency services were there very quickly. When I heard she had died it was so upsetting."
Neighbour Verna Woolley, aged 66, said: "I heard a siren and looked out of the window and saw the police cars and an ambulance. I spoke to my grandson who told me the young girl was in the same year as him at school. He was so upset."
Tara, who lived in Goldenhill, was a pupil at Maryhill High School in Kidsgrove until July last year.
The school's assistant headteacher, Jan Matthews, paid tribute to the teenager yesterday.
She said: "Tara will be sadly missed by her friends in the sixth form and the staff and students at Maryhill.
"We would like to extend our sincere condolences to her family. We will be praying for them during this difficult time."
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has any information is asked to contact North Staffordshire Road Policing Unit on 0300 123 4455, extension 3590.
