However, a spokesman for Stoke City confirmed Mr Hall had been arrested by police.

Mr Hall played for Stoke City's Under-18 side last season and scored the goal that put them through to the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup.

He was one of 10 young players who have recently been offered 'professional development contracts' to play at under-21 level at the club.

Friends of Megan-Leigh have left flowers and photographs at the house. One friend wrote: "A beautiful girl on the inside and out, whose life was just beginning."

Police are appealing for witnesses.
