NORTON residents say they are fed up with youths hanging around and intimidating people.

And neighbours of Matthew Morris say they are pleased he is now behind bars.

One 37-year-old man told The Sentinel : "I've lived here for four and a half years and during that time I've only had trouble from him (Morris). He would come knocking on the door, shouting and threatening me. I'd known him to be aggressive to other neighbours too."

His 33-year-old wife added: "Mr Mountford is a lovely man. You just can't go around attacking people of that age."

Residents say Peascroft Road isn't plagued by yobs.

But they said do have problems with anti-social behaviour at nearby Pinfold Avenue shops – the same area where Mr Mountford was attacked.

Beryl Gibbins, aged 61, who lives in Pinfold Avenue, said: "Every night there are kids hanging around outside the newsagents. I've seen the police come and move them on a couple of times. They can be quite intimidating and abusive when you walk past. If you don't respond to them, they start swearing."

A staff member at Pinfold Newsagents said: "We have a lot of problems with anti-social behaviour. It's mainly kids hanging around outside the shop causing distress to us and our customers.

"We've had a few incidents in the shop when we've had to call the police. The council recently put up bars around the flower bed area outside to try to stop the kids from sitting there."

Sergeant Rob Bateman, of Tunstall Neighbourhood Policing Unit, said police were working with other agencies to tackle anti-social behaviour problems in Norton.

He said: "We are working closely with neighbourhood management in Norton, as well as well as taking enforcement action, which is the more traditional way of dealing with this behaviour.

"We are looking at increasing the facilities in Norton to get kids off the streets.

"But we have also recently secured an anti-social behaviour order against a youth who was causing much of the problems in Norton."

“norton USED to be a lovely place to grow up in and then live in in later life with your own children, now its a god aweful place with large gangs walking the streets causing trouble and damage to property, shouting and screaming foul language even as late as 4:30 in the morning.
they say the police and council are working hard to stop all this behaviour, personaly ive not witnessed this taking place. they occasionaly have a drive through the estate and the standing joke on the estate is theres a police car, they must be lost.

we have a police post at the top of norton, only thing you see there on the occasions its actualy open is an empty room with pcso s drinking tea with police officers in the back doorway.

yobs gather on the shop areas at pinfold avenue, outside the coop on knypersly road, even outside the police post on knypersly road, by the garages on holowood placem the garages at the rear of thursfield place the pathway over the fields between norton and ball green.
yes the police and council are working hard to clear them away, dont know how or where but we get told they are??
i have lived in norton all of my life and i have never know the place as bad or as violent as it is at the moment. its not safe for myself to walk the streets here letalone my wife or children.
you have certain people on certain committies calling out what they want for norton what they and the police are doing for norton.nothing gets done for norton, except for the fact of people and certain local councillors getting their words and pictures in the local paper and then quickly dissapearing until the next time.

norton should be called norton in the moors, it should be called nortin in the chav, or norton in the wilds.
i as i have said have lived in norton all my life and didnt ever wish to live anywhere else, now i would leave and take my entire family away with me this literal minute if i were able or in a position to afford to, thats how bad this estate is now, its now a god aweful place with a lot of god aweful certain people for want of another word to descibe them making the place a living hell for everyone else that speaks out about them, and inevitably having their cars damaged or house windows put through or families threatened.

yes the police and council are doing so much to improve the estate and the quality of life that these scum are dictating that we shall or shall not have.”

“Anon in Norton, I personally know for a fact that the police and council are doing a lot of work in Norton to try to address the antisocial behaviour there. Have you reported any of the problems you have seen or have been a victim of? Unless people complain there isn't much they can do. And I know some people would say what's the point of reporting it; to that all I can say is you can't really moan then if nothing gets done...”

“It states the police and council are "working with other agencies to tackle anti-social behaviour problems in Norton"
what a load of Cr*p, I live in norton and watch daily as the same familys cause both and noise not giving two monkeys about there neighbours.

these lay abouts have no jobs, so can stay up all night playing music and having parties, then sleep all day while the tired honest working residents struggle to earn a wage after no sleep.

I love Norton and always have, but the teenagers that roam the streets are making life hell.”
