Staffordshire police officers fire Taser stun guns 27 times in 6 years
POLICE in Staffordshire have used Taser stun guns 165 times since the weapons were introduced six years ago.
But latest Home Office figures show the Tasers have actually been fired just 27 times between April 22, 2004 and March 31, 2010.
-

HOLDING FIRE: Staffordshire Police fired their Taser guns 27 times in six years.
A Taser gun is fired when two barbed darts trailing wires are discharged from the gun to deliver 50,000 volts of electricity to temporarily incapacitate a suspect.
In a further seven cases, the Tasers have been held directly against someone's body and used to give them a momentary electric shock.
A further breakdown of the figures show Tasers in Staffordshire have been aimed at a suspect with the safety catch removed and a red dot laser sight shining on the target 92 times.
Aiming the weapon with the safety catch still on happened 13 times and the Taser was simply drawn by officers on 14 occasions.
The Tasers were 'arced' 11 times, which means the weapon is sparked but a cartridge isn't fired.
One of the Taser deployments was not recorded because of a lack of a complete record.
In contrast Cheshire Police are recorded as using Tasers 65 times between April 2004 and March 2010 and firing them 18 times.
A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: "Staffordshire Police always endeavour to resolve violent situations and those involving armed people safely and without force.
"However, when that fails, Tasers give us an option to bring serious incidents to a swift and safe conclusion.
"The devices are a less-lethal alternative to conventional police firearms.
"They have made a significant contribution in a number of challenging situations, allowing police to bring violent offenders under control without causing injury to the person or the officers."
In 2008, Staffordshire Police bought 70 Taser weapons and 82 firearms officers were trained to use them.
In 2009, the force received Home Office funding to buy another 100 Tasers which are worth £1,000 each.
The idea was to extend their use to officers who were not firearms trained but would be taught to handle Tasers.
A programme to train the extra officers was completed last year.
Now 164 Staffordshire bobbies are trained to use Tasers across a force which has more than 2,000 officers. It has not been disclosed how many Tasers the force has.
Anyone using a Taser must fill out a form giving details of the incident.
Nationally in England and Wales Tasers have been used 8,599 times between April 2004 and March 2010. And in that period the weapons were fired 2,185 times.
The Metropolitan Police has fired them the most times, discharging them on 401 occasions while Warwickshire and City of London Police each fired them just once.
Amnesty International is opposing moves to make Tasers available to ordinary police officers.
A spokesman for the charity said: "Tasers are potentially lethal weapons, inherently open to abuse. They should be restricted to specially trained and accountable firearms officers."

“Ellis no I dont go looking up IP addresses, no point really, as for Andy well ?.
You read the article in the Sentinel last night regards Anger Management, goes a long way to proving my point regards inflexible attitudes of Police Officers, its interesting in as much statistics play a large part in what they have to say to reassure the public in regards to how they are dealing with the PROBLEM officers, but they always fall short of saying how many complaints were actually upheld, mmm poetic licence or blind faith, but certainly a contributing factor in ensuring that the senior police officers keep weapons that may go bang out of circulation to every officer, and to those that dont believe all weapons shouild come out of general circulationremember Mendoza, minimum forcw hey???”

“KD no point in trading insults with the inane, contribute something and act like an an adult, or continue to be a pr*ck.
Judge dredd or is it dead, what do you call an under cover police officer working in the area of catching drugs dealers then?
confused of stoke, yes, head for a corner and mutter, seems you are in a room.
@ Ellis totally agree, methinks its Andy of Sandbach choking on his own ineptitude. Like all Police man the pressure of their own psychoses gets them in the end, it is on a sliding scale the higher up the tree the greater the psychotic episodes..............”

“Lazarus..... Drug squads don't exist.
Why don't you volunteer and conduct just one night shift in the city and just see how far you get! If you lasted the night I am 100% confident you would change your tune!”

“Andy as normal bait, hook, landed. For once would it be possible to see things as they are instead of straight away heading for the moral high ground and the accompanying stereo typical tirade of indignations. Yes you were a Policeman, and yes taking into account you would have been involved with scenes that would have to include a drunk with a knife, you cannot generalise that every situation will be the same and the use of a Taser or a gun is therefore required, that is just plain stupid I could say well would the person be wielding a knife if you were not there, recently I told two members of my family off for being public spirited in sitting on a drunk who happened to be an off duty drugs squad officer, pointing out that the violent outburst would probably have ceased and the fact that they were in no danger because when someone is so inebriated it is difficult to function and they can¿t run, simple let them get on with it, drunk as a lord and wanting to lash out, maybe the pressures of the job, that¿s life.
It seems that the Police have adopted a confrontational stance on all issues and now it seems events, and occasions we don¿t see officers in normal attire at certain carnivals any more they wear armour and riot gear, this is not conducive to the removal of fear that people have when they see young men actively looking for conflict, it¿s no surprise then when it arrives is it, makes good press and justifies a whole new platform that denies spontaneity and allows further control measures for the Police to acquire.
As for the puerile attempt at a slur please try harder , have you ever been disciplined for anything or forgotten the Law, or borrowed the odd pen from work, where does that leave you clever clogs. Upholder of the Law.. And I ve never had realty with an intoxicated person????
As for an anti police rant its more an anti police philosophy and work method rant, in reality, yes some situations do require closure, how you get there is the problem and the use of Tazers is not the solution, you prove to me statistically when it became relevant to use such weapons other than probably a trip to America or a sales pitch from a supplier to one of the background boys at base, like other recent innovative socially engineered solutions to the control of the public, mmm controls not really conducive to public support is it, like the Police use a system gauging public opinion that suits the ethos and direction that the authors of the poll wish to go in, marvellous but erroneous, it lacks depth and credibility, but succeeds in feeding a self driven requirement to generate a requirement to evolve in a driven direction, hence Tazers, other examples include the steel truncheon, and will not preclude the use of future innovative control systems, used of course in the control of the "threat of crime" etc.
Oh finally KD Kidsgrove, worthy a little consideration, when you get past being a facile buffoon and commit to contributing more than an ad lib comment, well then it will of course free you of being an ASS.”

“Only problem is when the police have weapons then the crimminals arm themselves the police move on to handguns so do the criminals then shot guns and so on. It escalates and make it more dangerous for joe public.”
