Plans for major rail expansion are on right track
RAIL enthusiasts have been given more time to buy shares in a major railway expansion scheme in the Moorlands.
So far shareholders have invested just over £330,000 in the project to connect the Moorlands back to the national railway network.
The Churnet Valley Railway has now extended its share issue in a bid to reach its £450,000 target. Work on restoring the four mile line between Leekbrook and Endon is due to begin within weeks.
The project is a joint partnership between Moorland & City Railways and the heritage railway.
The first steam trains are expected to be sent down the line to Endon by late spring.
CVR chairman Anthony Hancock said: "Subject to the level of financial support we receive via the share issue, we hope to run inaugural passenger trains to Endon by late spring.
"The survey has given us a clear picture of the scope and cost of work that will need to be done by our volunteers who will also be supported by contractors where necessary."
Churnet Valley Railway shares, which will also help fund improved facilities at Cheddleton Station, cost £1 each and are available in any amount from £100 upwards.
