Planners say 'nein' to Aldi
PLANS to bulldoze a listed building and replace it with a budget supermarket have been thrown out by councillors.
German retailer Aldi wanted to demolish the Earl of Crewe pub in Crewe and build a 1,400 square metre store and 85-space car park.
The Victorian property in Nantwich Road is on the local list of buildings of historic and architectural interest.
But residents say the pub's owner has neglected it.
The Southern Planning Committee at Cheshire East Council yesterday voted against Aldi's proposals.
Nine councillors were against and four in favour.
Councillor Simon McGrory said the authority should not consider demolishing a building on the local list without a public consultation.
He added: "The state of the building should not be a reason."
The decision came despite John Morris addressing the committee on behalf of a number of residents who were in favour of the development.
Mr Morris, whose home overlooks the pub, said it had become "decrepit".
