Pickles's ideas on how to save cash
COMMUNITIES Secretary Eric Pickles unveiled 50 tips for 'sensible savings' and urged authorities to follow Stoke-on-Trent City Council's lead by shutting subsidised staff canteens.
The Government's suggestions did, however, leave plenty of scope for the city council to make further savings – as other tips including shutting propaganda magazines, scrapping the post of chief executive and cutting out consultants.
Mr Pickles, pictured below, also criticised councils for sitting on 'record' reserves and failing to collect tax they are owed.
The 50 savings document, published as councils began to receive details of their funding settlements for the next two years, challenged authorities to cancel 'away days in posh hotels'.

Leasing out space in the library to a coffee shop will generate revenue and encourage more people into the library, the communities department said.
Hiring out town halls for weddings and theatre productions and leasing out works are other ideas.
The tips also include scrapping trade union posts and advertising space on council payslips.

“Will the government be shutting the subsidised restaurants and bars at Westminster ? It would certainly help the bloated Eric Pickles to live a healthier lifestyle !”
