HOSING DOWN: Smokers are being urged to stub it out to improve the home environment for children.

NHS North Staffordshire has joined forces with Staffordshire Fire Service in a bid to increase the number of 'smoke-free homes' across the Moorlands. Yesterday the fire service hosted an event to help train health visitors, teachers and fire crews to reduce children's exposure to second-hand smoke and motivate people to kick the habit.

The event was held at Cheadle Fire Station, Ashbourne Road, Cheadle.

Pictured are firefighter Dave Edge and NHS tobacco control co-ordinator Helen Jones combating second-hand smoke.
