Owner could face Alton bus crash charges
THE company which owned a coach involved in a fatal crash
could face legal action, according to detectives.
Police are investigating whether the brakes failed on the
vehicle. It lost control on a steep hill in Alton, crashing
into a garden and turning on to its side.
Polish national Piotr Wolski, aged 27, died in the crash,
and another four people remain in hospital from their injuries.
Three of them, all women, are said to be in a stable condition,
while the bus driver's state is described as, "critical but
stable".
Detective Inspector Guy Titchener said: "We have interviewed
nearly all the passengers involved; we have progressed really
well with that.
"Our attention is now focused on forensic examinations of
the coach, and inquiries with Decker Bus, the company which
owned it, to see if we can gather evidence to proceed with a
prosecution, either against the company or any individual, in
respect of any criminal offences."
DI Titchener said fruit picker Mr Wolski had suffered a head
injury, and died at the scene of the accident at Farley Lane,
Alton, on August 18. The coach was filled with 71 migrant
workers, who had been enjoying a day trip to Alton Towers from
a farm in Peterborough.
A statement issued by Decker Bus, based at Whittlesey,
Peterborough, says: "We send our sincere sympathies and
condolences to all involved and the families of the dead and
injured.
"We are working closely with all the relevant authorities
and emergency services who will, no doubt, update parties as
investigations are carried out."
