The Origin of Grandparents’ Day
(Advertorial Feature)
Grandparents’ Day began life as a campaign by West Virginia resident Marian McQuade. After growing up with her grandmother and seeing all the amazing work she did for her family, as well as the wider community, Marian decided that grandparents all over the world deserved a day of recognition.
During the 1970’s Marian campaigned for a national holiday to be created to recognise the hard work and support that grandparents provided on a daily basis. From baby-sitting and cooking to financial and emotional support, grandparents add so much value to the family unit, so it’s easy to see why, even back then, Marian believed they deserved some appreciation.
After a few years of campaigning President Carter officially recognised the occasion and Grandparents’ Day was born. In 1990 the national holiday was brought over to the UK by the charity Age Concern who believed that celebrating grandparents in this country was a worthy cause indeed.
