BIG-SPENDING water companies have swelled profits at a North Staffordshire manufacturer.

Ashbrook Simon-Hartley, which has its head office in Newcastle and a factory in Fenton, has landed £3 million of orders this year from Scottish Water.

The deals have been for a new product developed by the Lymedale Business Park water treatment firm.

The filter plate press uses much less energy to separate waste from water.

Managing director Matt Gibson said watchdog Ofwat has to approve five-year spending plans for water companies – and that the current part of the cycle meant more sales for Ashbrook Simon-Hartley.

Mr Gibson said: "There tends to be a big surge in the fourth year as they rush to implement projects which have to be completed by the end of the fifth year.

"That's why most water treatment companies are owned by multi-nationals – most smaller companies wouldn't be able to survive the two-year dead period."

Ashbrook Simon-Hartley employs 56 people in North Staffordshire, and it has plans to take on another four next year.

The new recruits will be needed to help deliver plans for growth – especially overseas.

Turnover this calendar year is expected to be about £12 million, up 30 per cent, while profits are likely to exceed last year's £1.3 million.

About 30 per cent of the company's business is export, and that is expected to grow to 40 per cent next year.

Mr Gibson said: "We moved into South Korea earlier this year and we have just got two more orders totalling more than £100,000 across the two machines.

"South Korea should be really good for us, and so should China.

"We are also expecting a big order from the Philippines at the start of next year.

"As population grows more and more, the developing world needs clean drinking water, and there's going to be demand for water treatment."
