Sentinel Leader: Offer to buy Wedgwood Museum collection will keep it intact
IT'S good to know that someone out there takes notice of my daily ramblings.
Yesterday I urged readers to get in touch with any friendly millionaires they might know after the High Court ruled the world-renowned Wedgwood Museum collection can be sold to help pay off a massive pension fund deficit.
And I can only assume someone took me at my word after North Staffordshire entrepreneur John Caudwell (who is in fact a billionaire rather than your common-or-garden millionaire) offered to buy the entire collection and keep it at Barlaston if no other solution can be found.
Mr Caudwell speaks for many when he says: "It is vital that such an important piece of history and heritage remains in the Potteries."
It remains to be seen whether anything will come of his offer – the administrators have already said they are trying to avoid selling the collection at all, although another option could be a sale to benefactors who would allow it to remain in place. I suspect the legal complications arising from one private owner might prove insurmountable, but I await further developments with interest.
