CARERS axed their visits to an elderly disabled woman after discovering a harmless starter pistol in her home.

The gun, used by her husband who races pigeons, was even checked out by the police who decided not to take any action because no offences had been committed.

But Creative Support, the company contracted by Stoke-on-Trent City Council to carry out its care for the elderly, now refuses to send staff to the house.

The decision meant immobile and incontinent Nancy Nicklin, aged 78, was left without nursing care for 24 hours when the firm cut the visits without informing the family.

Carers came across the orange pistol, owned by Mrs Nicklin's 79-year-old husband John, on Saturday. Mr Nicklin says he explained the pistol was harmless and demonstrated it was not dangerous by firing it outside.

But carers called in police and, although visits continued as usual on Sunday and Monday morning, they suddenly stopped.

Now the council has sent in temporary carers, but they can only visit twice a day rather than the usual four times meaning Mrs Nicklin is stuck in bed all day.

Mr Nicklin said: "When the carer saw the gun she asked me about it and I explained I use it for racing the 24 pigeons I keep in the yard.

"I thought nothing more of it and couldn't believe it when the police turned up later that day.

"When no carers turned up on Monday afternoon I didn't know what was happening. Eventually I got through to a manager who told me they had withdrawn their care.

"The council carers came out the next morning, but until then, Nancy was stuck in bed and couldn't get to a toilet or anything. I tried to clean her up the best I could but I'm on crutches myself.

"It was very upsetting for Nancy, and it's terrible she can't get out of bed.

"This has been blown out of all proportion."

Council officials say they are investigating the incident. Councillor Jean Bowers, portfolio holder for adult social care, health and communities, said: "The council has a duty of care to support Mrs Nicklin, but also to support those who provide the care. Care managers will speak to the family to help establish what happened and work out future care arrangements.

"Pending the outcome of the investigation, Mrs Nicklin has been offered replacement support, in the form of respite care or care delivered at home."

Chris Hindle, Creative Support's service director for the Midlands, said: "If a situation develops where we believe staff could be placed at an unacceptable level of risk a decision will be made, jointly with other agencies, to suspend service to allow a full investigation."

A police spokesman said: "Police investigated and found no offences had occurred, and it was not appropriate to take any further action."

“thankyou to all ta comments abourt carers who have nvq2, yes you have bad and good staff but there are more good care staff, cause you have to have good bones to do care, i know i've done it for 19 yrs,and you have to be so carefull these days you see a gun or pistol dosnt matter what its used for, but you have to be on your guard in this profession, i know my famliy would be more worried for my saftey if it was me in that position, the managers wouldn't be doing there job if they put there staff in any dangerous situation”

“How can you tell people that you are NVQ qualified, when your spelling and grammar skills are totally innaccurate.”

“Flora...Meir, yes flower, well awere of the meaning of NVQ and if you get one you are still not very qulafiyed. I infact have got a NVQ level 2 and level 3 in elderly care, so I do know what I'm talking about I think, and the reason I left care, it was full of silly littel girls who did not use there brains, much like I think the careres who did this.”

“Some of the older folks are not always the nicest of folks and perhaps we should recognise this when we read stories such as this. Protection of public facing workers is not something to be taken lightly.”

“The standard for care workers is very high and govened by CSKI.
There are two sides to every story and of course we have only heard one side, Mr Nicklins. There are many happy service users out there cared for by CREATIVE SUPPORT but unfortunatley nothing travels faster than bad news. Carers make a difference to some peoples lives and they build strong bonds with them. They work long hours and underpaid for some of the work they have to carry out, and in some cases the abuse they receive from service users and their families, and yet they still have to go back day in day out and carry on the job, because some families just cannot be bothered, carers are there to care, and we do, and we do it well.”

“It seems to me that John's pigeons may have more brains and human feelings then the care workers involved in this case. You can bet they have all got there NVQs in care, but we know what NVQ stands for, not very qulafiyed.”

“Where did they find it what were they looking for in the first place and why were they snooping around? The thing was painted bright yellow don't see many guns like that do ya and hadn't they ever seen the pigeons in the yard and ever asked about them? This surely would have come up in normal conversation. The worlds gone crazy, maybe they thought he'd use it to startle them into working faster.heh?”

“Two sides two every story! If this story happened the way it says then I agree its disgusting. But these companies like creative are here to give these elderly vulnerable people a better way of life under difficult circumstances. I imagine they have had to put up with a lot in their jobs and if this elderly gent expects us to believe that creative gave up on this woman over what is written in this article then he is severely mistaken. There is no way in hell they would pull care and call the police if they hadn¿t of thought there was a genuine risk to their carers. So this butter wouldn¿t melt I live for my pigeons mentality he seems to be flaunting in my eyes is a complete farce. It¿s the job of these carers to look after these people but the carers themselves have the right to feel safe in the work place. Personally I think we have had the wool pulled over our eyes and there is more to the story than we are being told. I would like to praise the work the carers in Stoke-On-Trent do. I have known people who have had this kind of care and without the great job the carers do they would not have a standard of life anywhere near as good as they get. I imagine being a carer is a tough job and not everyone in Stoke is so ungrateful for the effort you all put in. To everybody else this might come as a shock to you but don¿t believe everything you read.”
