Boston United 0, Nantwich Town 5

NANTWICH recovered from their New Year blues with a stunning performance at the York Street Stadium.

The Dabbers took over an hour to make a breakthrough, but finished with a stampede that produced four goals in the last nine minutes.

The outstanding Michael Lennon helped himself to a hat-trick and also claimed assists with the strikes by Ashley Carter and substitute Dave Walker.

The result took Nantwich within one point of the play-offs with games in hand, and delighted head coach Steve Davis said: "Our aim has always been the top five, so we are on target.

"I was looking for seven points from the three games over Christmas and New Year, but we fell a point short after losing 1-0 at home to Cammell Laird.

"But that result formed the basis of my team talk at Boston. We played well against Cammell Laird and should have won, so I told the lads to take out their frustrations on Boston."

Davis admitted he thought it was going to be "another of those days" when they arrived at half-time still goalless after creating by far the better of the opportunities.

He said: "We had two of three good efforts whereas Boston had only half-chances, so my message at half-time was to be more clinical. We needed to stick 'them away."

Lennon fashioned the opening on 65 minutes with a shot that was parried into the path of Carter and Davis said: "Once the first goal had gone in Boston came out more and left big spaces at the back. In the end we could have won by more."

Lennon struck on 81, 87 and 90 minutes and Walker completed the nap hand in added time.

Davis added: "It was a cracking game and a rewarding performance. I told the lads that if they played like that no one would live with them."

NANTWICH: Jones, Jarrett, Kiss, Smith, Tnson, Parkinson, Carter, Westwood, Gibson, Whittaker, Lennon. Subs: Francis, Walker, Mahmood, Jack, Roberts.

Attendance: 987.
