New limits for busy schools
AROUND £275,000 is to be spent over the next two years on introducing part-time speed limits outside schools.
Staffordshire County Council has drawn up a list of 78 priority schools situated by busy A or B roads to receive new limits.
The changes are likely to be phased in on a case-by-case basis. A total of 48 schools will be dealt with each school year.
The county council's cabinet is expected to rubber stamp the proposals at a meeting today.
A report states: "Initially we will start introducing these zones at those locations where the risk is greatest. Our analysis shows this tends to be where schools are located on A and B roads. We have allocated £275,000 from our budget to begin this work in 2010/11.
"We want these schemes to be legally binding and enforceable and by making the schemes part time (i.e when children are arriving at, or leaving school), we think there is a greater likelihood of motorists complying with the schemes."
