A MUSLIM mother is planning legal action against a GP after her baby son's circumcision went wrong.

Faiqa Akram paid £80 for three-month-old Naveed to be circumcised at a private clinic because she could not have the treatment on the NHS.

But Naveed is one of four boys who have needed treatment at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire after suffering complications following private circumcisions.

Naveed, now 18 months, required a full operation under general anaesthetic and still needs more surgery to put things right.

Now, Mrs Akram and husband Nadeem are preparing a claim for potential clinical negligence against Dr Munir Butt, who runs the clinic, in Manchester.

The move comes as Mrs Akram launches a campaign to make NHS Stoke-on-Trent pay for religious non-medical circumcisions.

Mrs Akram, of Knight Street, Tunstall, said: "I couldn't believe what we saw. It was like a circumcision factory.

"There were 12 other babies waiting to be seen. When it was Naveed's turn, we had to leave him on a wooden table with just a changing mat."

Days later, Mrs Akram took Naveed to a doctor. He referred him to a surgeon at the University Hospital, who tried to correct the damage.

The General Medical Council and Kirklees Primary Care Trust, which covers Dr Butt's surgery, have confirmed they are investigating medical issues relating to Naveed's treatment.

The Sentinel made a number of attempts to contact Dr Butt, but a spokesman for his clinic said: "He isn't here, but I'm sure we will not comment."

The Healthcare Commission has investigated the four cases at the University Hospital after concerns were raised by a consultant there.

It is not clear which private clinics the other boys were referred from.

Hospital medical director Robert Courteney-Harris said: "The Commission asked us how these had been managed. Evidence was provided and the issue is now closed."

“To Anne, Stafford: Burning young ladies at the stake for supposedly being witches goes back years too, but we wouldn't contemplate that nowadays.”

“how can circumision be regraded as mutilation?? thats an extreme phase to use. ! i suggest u go away and do some research on circumision as it goes back to many many years , this is not about why or if YOU think its right or wrong to have a baby circumised, its about a mother MRS AKRAM who is sueing , and needs her son s circumision corrected.

why should a baby suffer from a mistake a doctor has done? does it really matter who corrects it,as long as its done???
good luck to Mrs Akram hpe a suitable doctor will correct this nightmare !”

“I still stand by my earlier comment. Regardless of any religious arguments or arguments on cost and who should pay for a circumsision, the unnecessary mutilation of a child is nothing more than child abuse and it should be persued to the full extent of the law.”

“it seems to me that people are losing the interest in the problem, people ar making it about race and religion when it comes down to neglance from doctors, why shouldnt ANY procedure be done under the NHS considering nearly EVERYONE WHATEVER religion has paid into and in this country has right to? it is not just muslims who do this circumcision, jewish and christian faith do. but it not heard of as much as others. yes i symthaise with this mother as im a mum of two boys, both have been done, my first child was done by a doctor in S O T but my second child was in BIRM a private clinic both i had to pay for, my second child ended up going to my local gp to get more cream to heal better, if the NHS did this within the time scale that ALL parents require than it would drop the amount of babies having to go back to the local GP, but who says that the procedure can be proformed better by the NHS than private clinics?? i think it is just something a parent has to decide for themselves, before my sons were taken to be circumised i did the research of the clinic and i got reccommendations from other parents. this is a worring time for any parent and yes the baby may be in pain for a while but if done correctly and given the right medicine they heal. it is better to circumise a baby than a 10 year old boy whos in need of it later, the pain would be so much worse, my sons were really good and carried on as normal, with no excess crying or showing of them in pain, i made sure they took their medicine at the right time and they were kept clean and dry, if people are too busy to carry on with the requirements after than YES the baby will suffer pain and that is the parents fault. this is a procedure that been going for many of years. the whole point of this is that Yes the clinic that the mother took her son to didnt do a correct procedure and so the NHS had to correct it , but research is the key if going private and the NHS should make it available for Anyone who wants this done within the time scale required, people go private mainly as the NHS has a long waiting list and you dont want to circumise a baby who is over 4 mths or so.
PEOPLE you are so quick to tell this women she is in the wrong , but this world today is losing all its morals, religious views , respect. its not OUR place to tell another person not to have this done and hope she loses her battle to sue, as Mrs Akram had this done due to HER religious views , not yours ! everyone has a right to medical care in this country and why should this be any different?
i hope Mrs Akram wins her battle , its not the wrong of the mother it was the doctor who proceded the circumision that went wrong , he should not be allowed to carry on doing that procedure.
    good luck .”

“Acording to NHS figers, it costs around £40million a year to keep a religus presance in our hospitels. Acordind to this report it costs £80 for this in a privet clinic, why on earth can it not be given free to famleys who want it to meet religus demands, but of-couse, meny would not like that at all, but they demand treatment if they get drunk and fall down in the street,or waste erveryones time if they have a sniffel and go up the doctors demand lord knows what and a sick note, thats if they go to work and pay tax anyway.”

“Any mother with love for her child wouldn't want to put them through anything with pain or risks. To think she was concerned about the place before the op, is obsurd. Why leave him there?? I thought that before any operation is carried out, the risks are hightlighted to you first, and you have to sign to say you are aware of them. Isnt a childs foreskin fused up until at least the age of 5?? surely there is a reason for this? How idiotic of any parent. I hope this poor child gets over his problems. And I hope this story gets as much publicity as possible. Hopefully any parents out there who would consider putting there child through the selfish cosmetic act will think again.”

“In response to "A Mum,Stoke-on-Trent" Yes all and every parent that has this done on religious grounds should be prosecuted.Just because it's done in the name of some god or another does not make it right.Maybe we shouldn't prosecute priests who abuse children because they hold a position of religion? What is your position on female circumcision that's done on religious grounds?”

“Like any other person on this planet, the Akram family have the right to believe in whatever they wish and exercise their beliefs and religion. A debate is developing over what is ethical here.
Just because they live in England doesn't mean they have to drop their beliefs and become "one of us".
And just because we think something is right or wrong doesn't mean we have the right to force this belief on someone else, neither does it give us the right to criticise someone for believing otherwise.
oh and one last comment for all our so called doctors of psychology and medicine,,,, yes, circumcision causes psychological problems for "some" patients.
But what about a child who has a baby at the age of 13, a young adult who drinks themselves senseless night after night, a single mother, a drug addict, a woman who has children from more than 2 separate fathers, broken marriages. All of these are considered acceptable in our society, nobody questions whether these problems are causing psychological damage.
These problems don't stem from religion, and it's these problems we as a society should be tackling. Not worrying about a Muslim family and foreskin.

So before we start criticising other cultures, and other people, We should really look around, because i hate to break it to you all but we are not in a place to point fingers.”
