AFTER a dramatic final week of 2012, the new year brought a welcome new addition to Zahida Parveen's family.

The 37-year-old spent Christmas in hospital after she had a fall a few days before she was due to give birth.

Doctors at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire found her baby was unharmed, but was lying in the wrong position for delivery.

Zahida's labour had to be induced, and her son Shan arrived safely at 7.45am yesterday, weighing almost 8lb.

Zahida, from Blurton, said: "I tripped over a carpet and fell at home on Christmas Eve.

"I hurt my leg and couldn't walk so I had to come to the hospital.

"I thought I would be able to come back home, but the said I had to stay because the baby's position was not good. He was lying cross ways.

"At first they said I might need a Caesarean-section, but I was induced and he turned around, so I had a normal delivery."

Zahida and her husband Arshad Mahmood already have a 19-year-old son and daughters aged eight and four.

She said: "They have been really excited about the new baby.

"My little one, Saba, says no one is to touch him, she's going to look after him."

Engaged couple Jess Rushton and Luke Tuson also welcomed a son into the world yesterday.

Their first child, Jayden, was born at 5.20am, weighing 7lb 8oz.

Jess, from Stone, said: "He was due on New Year's Eve and I started in labour at 7.30am that day.

"I stayed at home as long as I could and came to hospital at around 10.30pm. I thought they would probably send me home and we'd be back for midnight, but we stayed.

"We heard the bells go for midnight while we were waiting to go to the delivery room."

The couple, who both work as carers, were planning to tie the knot next year, but the wedding plans have been put on hold following Jayden's arrival.

Jess, aged 21, said: "It's lovely that he was born on New Year's Day. We didn't really plan anything at Christmas because he was due.

"I didn't think he would be here yet though, I thought I would be going to see my midwife on Thursday.

"It's going to be expensive having his birthday and Christmas so close together."

Proud dad Luke, aged 19, was delighted by his son's arrival.

He said: "I'm really happy and excited for the future.

"We have got a New Year's present and a Christmas present in one.

"He is gorgeous, he's daddy's boy. I can't wait for him to be running around the park playing football with me."

It was a busy night for staff at the hospital's maternity unit, with eight babies born in the first few hours of the new year.
