CAMPAIGNER Laura Burgess is due to undergo surgery today to remove and replace her PIP breast implants.

The 25-year-old mum is one of 40,000 women in the UK to have been fitted with silicone implants made by the French company Poly Implant Prothese (PIP).

She paid £4,250 for surgery to have the implants to boost her confidence but is preparing to take out a loan to pay for the new £2,995 operation after an investigation was launched into the material used for the first implants.

Fears that the PIP implants could burst have been raised because non-medical silicone intended for use in mattresses was used to create them.

Mrs Burgess, from Goodwood Place, Trentham, originally had her surgery with the Harley Medical Group, which has refused to replace the implants free of charge.

She is leading a national campaign to get help for women with the implants and says she will continue to push for a refund for her operation.

Mrs Burgess said: "No-one knows what the long-term effects of these implants are. People say tests have been done and they don't think there is a problem, but that isn't good enough for me. I've already had to have mine looked at twice. Now I just want them out."

Mrs Burgess, a mum-of-one, had the operation four years ago to even out and enlarge her breasts.

She says it improved her confidence so much that she couldn't go back to not having implants.

But she has been worrying since the scare came to light and has previously suffered with burning pains in her chest.

She will go into the Nuffield Hospital, in Clayton, for the operation today. Mrs Burgess, who is taking unpaid time off work to have the surgery, added: "The Nuffield has put a special offer on and the staff there have been brilliant.

"The surgeon will use a different type of implant and said he never used PIP implants because he didn't think the quality was good enough.

"I'll have to get a loan to pay for it but I'm lucky I'm in a position where I can get one. I feel elated knowing I'm going to have them out, but I can remember how much the operation hurt last time."

Mrs Burgess' husband Carl, aged 31, said: "Since this has all come out life has been a living hell."

Mrs Burgess' Facebook group, called PIP Implant Joined Support – Harley Medical Group Sufferers, now has more than 260 members.

They want Harley Medical Group to refund the cost of their surgery. The company apologised to patients but said replacing implants for free would ruin the firm.

After meeting with Mrs Burgess and other campaigners, the company has now agreed to remove implants for free for patients who have a confirmed rupture within 10 years of having them fitted.

Those who have a confirmed rupture within six years will have implants removed and replaced for free. Women with ruptures from implants between six and 10 years old can get replacement implants at cost price. No announcement has been made about what help will be offered to Harley Medical Group patients with PIP implants which have not ruptured.

“I Agree it is good that this lady will get her op at the Nuffield and then she will be relatively safe from the silicone.

My disappointment is that because all of these ladies are insisting on this being done straight away this is having an impact on people who were booked in to have operations at the Nuffield. I have personally lost my operation date for February and have had to be moved to March because the Surgeons now have to work around all these ladies.

I never asked for breast implants I just asked for an operation to make my life less painful, but because of this pip I get to stay in pain for an extra month at least ( they may move me again if more pip replacements book in).”

So why the "another cheeky freeloader" comment then? i am well aware and respect everybody's personal opinion regarding whether they agree to cosmetic surgery or not however your comments have no relevance to this story and i small merely pointing this out too you. i could of had my original surgery on the nhs as my circumstances is something that would class ne in the physiological need for implants however i funded it myself than furthemore funded my replacement implants to get these toxic things out of my body (which i didn't pay for) today again not going to the nhs to fix this.

i am a British citizen, work and pay my taxes like the rest of you so i small well within my rights to ask for help. we could argue until the sun came up if obese people should get gastric bands on the nos whether drug users or alcoholics get methadone or alcohol supplement money?? These are lifestyle choices these people have made that than got out of hand and now they need help....i see no difference in that scenario to the ones us ladies are facing. u ask us personally and you will find that not one of us are asking or expecting the nhs to fix this but the ladies who havrnt no way of funding this replacement surgery straight away may have no other option."Click to rate     Rating 0”

“Ooh yes i expected it but wanted to get my point across and try to guide the general public into knowling that there are a lot of different reasons as to why ladies have breast implants rather than the stereo typical glamour model (which by the way i have nothing against as each to their own).

Medical Silicone is a substance that has been vigorously tested for compatability with the human body. This extensive testing would carry on for a numourous number of years, at least 10 years before it is approved for use. The effects on the human body would be low and the only risk during this and after the operation as outlined to me in my consult with the surgeon was infection or capsular contraction which is the natural process of your body forming a capsule around the implant but in rare cases it can contract go hard and uncomfortable which would lead to you having to have that implant taken out. I weighed up the pro's and Con's and wasnt the "cheeky Freeloader" that anjo123 has suggested.

Industrial silicone is something that shouldnt be in a human body and has never been tested to do so. therefore no one knows what the long term damage is going to be, and the reactions that the human body is going through after exposure to this after rupture is shocking, it can range from burning, stabbing pains, red hot to the touch, the breast can swell to double its size... on from that there are the auto immune complications that we are experiancing and the palpatations, night sweats, fatigue etc.

    @ anjo123

If you read the article correctly you would of realised that we are NOT asking for the NHS to foot the bill but our clinics to provide us with what we paid for not an industrial silicone that should never be in a human body. Furthermore i am already booked in for replacement surgery at my OWN cost and fully intend on claiming this back from HARLEY MEDICAL GROUP - IE not one penny i am expecting from the NHS!!

And just to explain a little something about why i had my surgery it wasnt because i wanted a massive glamour model bust it was because i had one breast a lot larger than the other one as the breast tissue wasnt symetetrical which means i have 2 different size implants in to correct this huge difference, i had them because i wanted to correct this problem, and i am fully aware that if i had gone to the GP i could of argued my case that i needed it on the NHS but i didnt!! yet again i paid for it myself!

So the moral of the story is dont judge a book by its cover, i wanted to do this to show you that theres more to breast surgery than the typical stereo type..."

just costing this from the last article (as i am unable to type it all out again) i fully respect everybody's option when it comes to cosmetic surgery however i did NOT have then done for vanity reasons but the sentinel didn't even thou i asked them to put in the article exactly why i did as i have no reason to be ashamed. up until 3 weeks ago no one at work knew i had implants either was it discussed with my friends or family. so like above please dont judge a book by its cover i didn't pay for industrial silicone neither do i believe its totally hmg fault as the mhra failed to regulate them properly however i dont care who hmg's blames i brought a product and a servicethat i just didn't receive .”

“As much as I disagree with the implants I have to say that Mrs Burgess has got it right it should be the company that put them in that replaces them but at the same time it's not the company's fault because the PIP implants past the safety precision at the time. Although I can not really feel sorry for Mrs Burgess, due to the fact she had the implants for vanity, She is going about things in the right way instead of moaning that tax payer's should pay for the removal and replacements, she has had to take out a loan it may not be the best financial thing for her but as she new the implants wont last forever she should have already been saving towards replacements anyway.
However, whats done is done and she can not turn back time.”
