A MOTHER-OF-THREE engaged to a prisoner serving life for murder in a maximum security jail in America is hoping he will be released next year.

Julie Cottingham has been writing to prisoner Dante Cottingham for three years, and has visited him at Wisconsin's Columbia Correctional Institute five times.

The jail has been the 30-year-old's home since he pleaded guilty to first degree murder 13 years ago.

Dante was jailed for 25 years for murder after a £13 marijuana deal ended in a gunfight which left a man dead.

But divorcee Julie, who took his name for herself and her three children earlier this year, said he has had time enough to mature and reflect while incarcerated.

She is now holding on to the glimmer of hope that 2009 could be the year the man she says has been rehabilitated is released so that they can start a family.

The 40-year-old explained that her fiancé accepts he was involved in the murder. But she said he was not convinced that it was him who fired the fatal shot.

She said: "When Dante went to court he took a plea bargain that if he pleaded guilty to first degree murder they would give him parole during 2009, so he accepted that plea.

"But when it went before the judge after he had pleaded, the judge over-ruled the plea bargain and said parole would be in 2020.

"He has got a lawyer and he is planning to challenge the plea bargain to try to get it thrown out, and get a new trial.

"Because he was the last one picked up by the police, everyone had made their statements before he was arrested, and the finger had already been pointed in his direction."

Julie, from Newcastle, accepts that her unusual relationship with Dante raises a few eyebrows. She met him on an internet site and writes daily to his mother and family.

She says Dante's family get on well with her children Jesse, aged 14, Jasmine, aged 12, and nine-year-old Ethan.

Ethan has a collapsed airway and his treatment means Julie cannot leave him for long.

But the personal assistant hopes that one day he will be well enough for her family to be united with Dante's. She said: "The best case scenario is that Ethan gets fixed and we all go to live in America."

Ethan said: "I like him and he will be my daddy in the future."

“I have been informed of the various comments made regarding myself and Julie. This is my direct response and position -

There are far too many children around the world whom, for reasons not their own, have minds and perspectives that have been invaded by the disease of despair, of anger, of hopelessness and depression. Children without the natural inclination to guide thmselves out of the minefields of adolescence, children who if guided properly would of been future doctors and heads of state, but instead have made a series of bad decisions and caused harm to victims, community and themselves, our worlds lost children whom are only lost because of the negligence perpetuated by our worlds adults.

[I never cease to be in awe as I gaze into the face
of an Innocent child, when God gives them to us as
a blank sheet of paper - clean, pure and waiting to
be inscribed upon. They trust us, open themselves up
to us, and recieve whatever we give them, whether it
    be good or bad ]

Do our worlds lost boys and girls not deserve our undivided attention? Do they not deserve a voice speaking in their defense and for the protection of their future? Do they not deserve a second chance?
Well I am here to say that they do, as a former lost child, that is, I joined Chicago's biggest street gang at 13yrs old, there began a life sentence in maximum security prison at 17yrs old, where I have been for the past 13yrs. Now I am here to use my voice, that we do.
For Our human family has reached a level of sophistication that gives us a vision to acknowledge that it is indeed ideals that are the projectors of change, of reform and of progress, not severe retribution or the persecution of our most valuable resources. It is the distribution of love and hope, not hate and indifference that repairs the harm done to our lost children.
Through pro-action it is in our power to effectively combat this child destroying issue, but we must first acknowledge it. Together we can render the juvenile justice system obsolete, but we must first commit ourselves to the cause.
Together we can practice a world of service minded, focused children, but first we must see our neighbors child as our own.
So I implore you to digest this message and find out what ways you can be most effective in assisting the lost boys and girls in your immediate area.
A powerful role model could of redirected my childhood cause, it may be you who redirects another's.
I sincerely thank you for your time and attention, God Bless, Sir Dante D. Cottingham”

“When you Google Dante Cottingham you can find some of his writings and a short auto biography on several web sites, credit where credit's due he's a way with words and seems not to have wasted his time by not educating himself while in prison but when you've got 25 years on your hands its hard not to something to pass the time.I have just one question when was he Knighted because he refers to him self as Sir Dante Cottingham now I know this I'm being pedantic (overly concerned with minute details or formalisms ) here but if he can't be truthful in stating his title why are we to believe anything else he says.”

“To quote the background report in the Sentinel ( " Dante then had a background of street gangs and drugs and has been in jail ever since") I can't see the innocent child (17 year old) in all this, I think I need to go to the Rose Tinted spec shop,oh by the way gem, newcastle (Gem Newcastle) no is the answer to your question I'm not upper class just never been in the gutter.”

“Warren was right in his first post. What kind of person seeks out a convicted murderer to befriend? OK he may not BE a murderer but she couldn't have known that at the time, it's just a case of another silly woman seeking some sense of importance in her life. It'll all end in tears.”

“He was 17yrs old, on a night out, went to a local restaurant where he did a deal on $20 marijuana, an argument broke out between him and the dealer, it resulted in a shooting outside the restaurant between five of them with guns , this was not a gang related incident, there was nothing intentional, his girfriend was with him a the time, she was pregnant with his child, when the dealer started waving a gun and threatening to fire he responded by protecting himself and his girlfriend, so please do not assume he was a callous drug dealer, he was a kid caught up in a culture of guns and drugs, and sadly in the US it's happening on a daily basis still. This was not a premeditated or planned drug deal. He is now 30yrs old, a far cry from the child who was brought up around gang life, he is currently pursuing his paralegal degree, and Graduated Class Valedictorian in a Restorative Justice programme. If you believe in Prison then you should believe in rehabilitation, to all the people who have been supportive I thank you”

“gem , You playing the devils advocate is now becoming a little bit boring, the bottom line is this he was a member of an armed gang who went to a drugs deal ( £13 marijuana deal ) that left a man shot dead and was jailed for 25 years, His argument that he was not convinced that it was him who fired the fatal shot does not stand up all it says is he did fire his gun. Now firing a gun is not like on television where theirs a lot smoke and no one gets hurt to fire a gun in these circumstances is at best attempted murder at worst murder by association and that's what he got so lets leave him to do his time, as they say if you can't do the time don't do the crime.”

“BD, did you read this bit... "her fiancé accepts he was involved in the murder"? By his own admission he was involved in a major drug deal and shot at someone. I bet he's a lovely bloke. I hope they let him go and that he moves in next door.... (sarcasm, by the way)”
