THE mother of a young girl has launched a campaign to raise more than £3,000 after seeing her benefits slashed by £800 a month.

Harmony-Mae Tunstall, from Joiners Square, has spondylolisthesis, a slipped vertebra in her spine, and may need major surgery.

It leaves the five-year-old struggling to walk far and often in agony.

Her mum Claire Walker, aged 30, used to receive high-rate disability living allowance and carer's allowance but has had the money cut after Harmony-Mae was reassessed.

She believes her daughter is still sick enough to be given the money and said she was struggling to buy equipment to help ease her pain.

Claire, of Cornes Street, is now looking for help to purchase a specialist buggy to take Harmony-Mae out and a special mattress to help her at night.

The former student midwife, who has had to leave her course to look after her youngster, said: "Harmony-Mae's case was reviewed when she was five and I was told that because she can take part in classroom activities, feed herself and access education, she is not entitled to the disability allowance any more.

"I was getting £400 a month in disability allowance and £220 carer's allowance and that has affected other things such as child tax credits.

"It means my income has dropped by around £800 a month and that's a lot of money.

"She is a very confident and outgoing little girl and people often see her and think there's nothing wrong.

"What they don't see is what she is like when she stops going.

"She is in agony when she gets home from school. I just want to try to make things better for her."

Harmony-Mae, who goes to Waterside Primary School, was diagnosed with her condition when she was three.

Doctors believe she was born with it, but it was only picked up when she broke her knee and had trouble walking.

Her condition usually affects older people, and surgeons have told Claire it is rare to see someone so young with it.

If left untreated, it could cause back problems.

The youngster will see a consultant at Birmingham Children's Hospital tomorrow to discuss what action to take.

But she is also suffering from bladder problems and Claire expects doctors will want to correct those before attempting surgery on her spine.

In the meantime, she has started fund-raising for a buggy and mattress.

The first event was held at Bidds, in Longton, yesterday, when a group of friends completed a 24-hour cycling challenge on exercise bikes.

Claire added: "Harmony-Mae is too big for a normal pushchair now.

"It means she either has to walk when we go out, or we have to carry her."

Claire has been given a quote of £2,000 for a buggy.

She also wants a special massage mattress to help Harmony-Mae sleep at night.

The mum-of-two added: "She suffers from most of her pain at night after she has been moving around in the day.

"The mattress would massage her throughout the night to help her sleep."

A spokesman for the Department for Work and Pensions said: "Disability living allowance is paid to help people with the extra costs they have because they can't do things like walk, or wash and dress themselves.

"If someone's needs change, they may not be entitled to the benefit any more, or they may get it at a different rate."

Anyone who can help should email Claire on pinklady5181@hotmail.co.uk

“after all the fundraising that has gone on why is there and endleess amount of fundraising events being arranged, has there not been enough to achieve the 3000 already. Has ALL the money been accounted for. I collected for the blind and every penny i collected had to be accounted for in the presence of the police to make sure i was genuine and nothing underhande had taken place. Seems not to be the situation here. Are you a registered charity and do you have a legal right to collect money off people, where exactly is all the money going.... It seems somebody should look into this fundraising with great scrutiny and im sure things wont be as good as they seem, more and more collecting and where is it going to end with an everlasting amount of money being given and spent on what, If the disability is so, then why has the benifits been stopped, why are you not working, i do. Wake up and smell the roses people and take a good look at the situation, where is your money going, if i am wrong i apologise but if i am not, well mmmmm”

“I am confused to why the equipment was not bought previously with the vast amount of money she was getting if it was needed? If the little girl has been reassessed, her needs have obviously been reassessed and she obviously doesn't need the equipment (or the government would provide it surely??) all seems a bit odd. the quote above says... if untreated COULD cause back problems. Maybe if she does get problems in future she would be entitled to it! I have two children, one pf whom suffers from reflux and is waiting an operation and I often have sleepless nights, but I work, that is not an excuse,”

“It shows that some people are so narrow minded! Claire is a wonderful person and only ever wants the best for her children, Harmony-Mae is a fantastic little and should be an inspiration to other people who are disabled, she needs this equipment to improve the quality of her life, which will get harder as she gets older. Please if you have comments or opinions by all means voice them but dont make Claire out as the bad person that she isnt, as for people that know her go and speak to Claire regarding Harmony-Mae instead of hiding behind computer screen, you may understand alot more...”

“yes my daughter can walk......but it causes her discomfort.
yes i let her play because thats what children do.
yes she attends school as she loves school and education is important
the amount i wanted 2 raise was originally less than printed but this is due to salesmen telling me she needs a certain type for her condition
if u see me at school each day then u would see that i have more than likely not slept, and as 4 me gettin a job i would love to, if you knew me you will know my dreams of becoming a midwife ended due to harmon-mae being so unwell
i am the sort of parent though that puts my children first!
yes i meet with friends try 2 have a social life but surely i am entitled to that???????
i dont do anything at the expense of my childrens wellbeing they are my world and always will be.
so keep your opinions to yourself or if your that interested approach me rather than venting your uneducated opinions of my family and me on the internet, and if your that interested in my life you can attend one of harmony-maes many hospital appointments and realise what a brave little girl i have.”

“I gave up work to care for my father who passed away from his cancer recently, he applied for attendance allowance to enable me to claim for a carers allowance and after a 6 month wait he was awarded the higher rate, this was in July 2010 and in March 2011 he was told that his attendance allowance would be stopped without any further notice because he was apparently not sick enough, he died 7 weeks later.... i'm not sure how sick the goverment think people have to be before they allow them to make a claim.”

“As a parent of Waterside Primary, I see Harmony Mae on a regular basis running, jumping and acting as any other little girl, so I was quite surprised to hear of this fundraising event. At first the amount that her mum was looking for was said to be £700 and within a few days I believe it jumped to £2000 and then reading the article in the sentinel it was £3000.
Harmony Mae has not used a buggy before and is regularly seen walking to and from school and to the shops with her mum.
It is a shame that the disability allowance has stopped, but if those who provide the allowance have seen Harmony Mae as she is seen at school, I can fully understand why the allowance has stopped.
I agree with A Reader's comment, in that now Harmony Mae is at school, it gives her mum chance to look for some employment, if only part time to help with the costs of the equipment that her mum BELIEVES that Harmony Mae needs.”

“How have I made judgements? All I said was that you should now be able to go to work and that should help raise money. How is that nasty? It comes to something when a comment about being able to work is taken to mean something cruel.”

“All the best Harmony mae and mum. Don't take on board any nasty comments. You know how hard it is without the rubbish some people talk.
    Take care of yourself.”
