A YOUNG woman died at a house in suspicious circumstances yesterday, sparking a major police investigation.

Officers were called to a property in Kentmere Place, Clayton, at 5.30pm following reports a woman had been injured.

Paramedics tried to save the woman, who is believed to be a 20-year-old mother-of-one, but she died at the scene.

Police were today questioning a 19-year-old man, who was arrested in connection with the incident.

The deceased has not yet been formally named.

A section of the street was taped off as forensic examinations were carried out at the terrace house throughout the night.

Scenes of crime officers were due to continue combing the property and surrounding area today.

A post-mortem examination is expected to take place later this afternoon to establish the cause of death.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: "Police arrested a 19-year-old man in connection with the incident a short time later, away from the address. He has been taken to the force's Northern Area Custody Facility at Etruria for questioning."

Neighbours spoke of their shock as they watched police and paramedics descend on the street.

Lee Millward, aged 34, of Earls Drive, said: "It's a terrible thing to happen.

"It's normally a really quiet street so you don't expect anything like this to happen.

"I saw paramedics were trying to revive her in the living room and the police have been asking neighbours for information.

"I've seen her around a few times, but never really spoken to her: she seemed like a nice girl."

Matthew Gater, of Kentmere Place, said about five police cars were parked near his home last night.

The 28-year-old added: "A few people down the street said they saw police arresting someone over the other side of the road."

Paul Kiely, aged 37, who also lives on Kentmere Place, said: "I was out at work all day, but when I came back I saw a few police cars.

"I heard people saying that someone had been killed and it's come as a real shock."

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "Crews provided emergency medical treatment to a woman found at the scene.

"Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, nothing could be done to save the woman and she was confirmed deceased at the scene."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Staffordshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 527 of February 21, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
