ONE of two rare monkey twins born at a tourist attraction has died.

Staff at Trentham Monkey Forest had been keeping a close eye on the Barbary macaques since they were born on Friday.

But one of them was not strong enough to survive and died late on Sunday.

Monkey forest manager Matt Lovatt said: "It was always very touch and go with the twins.

"Unfortunately, one of them wasn't strong enough and we had some sad news.

"On the positive side, the mother now has one baby she can devote all her attention to.

"Both seem to be doing well."

The birth was so rare that there are only 10 other known cases reported around the world, but the species has a very low survival rate for twins because the mother has to produce more milk

Monkey forest staff believe the surviving twin is a girl.
