Midnight walkers help hospice keep on caring
HUNDREDS of women are poised to start walking through the night to raise money for the Douglas Macmillan Hospice.
The Midnight to Sunrise Walk is due to start and finish at the Britannia Stadium, and called in on Trentham, Longton, Fenton, Leek Road, and Heron Cross along the way.
A total of 1,500 women are expected to take part in the 10-mile walk, which is now in its third year.
The Blurton-based hospice is hoping to have raised around £200,000 from the event.
Peter Keller, PR and media officer for the hospice, said: "We have been delighted with the response to this year's walk.
"Many of the people who took part were walking in memory of a loved one and the money they have raised will allow the hospice to maintain the standard of care it provides to 1,700 patients in North Staffordshire."
Last night's event was sponsored by Stoke City FC, Connexions and Wardle Transport. The walk cost £15 to enter, which included a T-shirt, sported during the walk.

“i took part in the walk with my mum, nan, sister, auntie and cousin. we all completed it and i cannot explain the feeling i got when i crossed the finish line. im sure i speak for all women who took part, it was absoulutely amazing and although it was tiring, it was well worth it. i had my picture taken with my sister by the sentinel, and then we all had them done when we got back. well done to everyone who took part and all the volunteers.”

“I completed the midnight walk with my best friend, it took us 3hrs 30 mins to complete. I was diagonsed with bowel cancer in December 2007 and had major surgery to remove part of my bowel and completed a course of chemo. I am very lucky to be alive today and I really wanted to contribute and give something back to those who lost loved ones through cancer. I also wanted to support the Douglas Macmillian has they support and do a great deal of fantastic work for all kinds of families.”
