"Quite a lot of covers have gone missing and all six have been taken in one street.
"We believe around 80 per cent of grids in the area are now blocked up because the covers have been stolen.
"We have also had cases of scrap metal dealers jumping over fences to take items.
"We are now working with the city council to try to fix any problems."
Ward Councillor Joy Garner had toured the streets with police last week to identify the worst-hit areas.
She said: "The thefts usually happen overnight and obviously the back alleys are quite quiet. People will look for anything that is worth a value."
Latest figures show the city council has replaced 487 stolen iron grid covers in just two years at an estimated cost of more than £73,000.

“Last time this was going on, it was Scoucers coming down and swiping them.”
