Memorial to get go-ahead
COUNCIL officials will meet with campaigners to iron out the final details of a long-awaited war memorial.
Plans to build a new memorial in Tunstall Memorial Gardens were approved, subject to conditions, by Stoke-on-Trent City Council on April 22.
Two curved walls bearing the names of servicemen and women who have lost their lives in conflict are to be built at The Boulevard side of the garden.
But permission was granted dependent on a number of conditions, such as a sample panel being made available before work could begin.
Development control manager Paul Edwards said: "We need to agree the precise siting, the building materials, and tree protection measures to ensure the memorial is in keeping with the surrounding conservation area."

“MR EDWARDS SPOKE VERY WELL FOR THE MEMORIAL AT THE MEETING ON APRIL 22nd HIS COMMENTS WERE VERY MUCH APPRECIATED BY THE WAR MEMORIAL COMMITTEE HE DID HOWEVER SAY IN HIS COMMENTS THAT THESE CONDITIONS COULD BE SORTED OUT AS THE WORK WAS IN PROGRESS WE AS A COMMITTEE AND THE PEOPLE OF TUNSTALL NEED TO HAVE A FIRM START AND COMPLETION DATE SO THAT ARRANGMENTS CAN BE MADE FOR A BEFITTING INAUGURATION CEREMONY. THE SITING AND TREE PROTECTION HAVE BEEN AGREED THERFORE WE SEE NO REASON WHY THE GROUND WORK CANNOT BE STARTED AND AS MR EDWARDS SAID AT THE MEETING THE OTHER ISSUES CAN BE SORTED WHILE WORK IS IN PROGRESS .BUT THE MAIN ISSUE THAT IS HOLDING UP THE PROJECT IS NOT THE CONDITIONS BUT IS IN FACT THAT MR EDWARDS PLANNERS HAVE DECIDED TO CHANGE THE DESIGN OF THE PAVED AREA WHICH IS IN MY OPPINION NO BENIFIT TO THE ACTUAL MEMORIAL AND WILL INCURE A COST OF SEVERAL THOUSEND POUNDS,AS FOR THE BRICK PANNELS IT WAS SAID AT THE MEETING ON APRIL 22nd THAT THEY THE PANELS COULD BE BUILT ON THE NEW FOUNDATIONS SO PLEASE CAN WE ALL GET THE SAME SONG SHEET SO THE SINGING CAN BEGIN
