BOSS Dean Glover was given the perfect send-off as Vale ended their miserable season with a well-deserved victory.

Vale stormed to a two-goal lead in the first half thanks to goals from Louis Dodds and the manager's son, Danny Glover.

The striker's goal proved to be a pivotal moment after his initial effort was handled off the line by full-back Abu Ogogo who was subsequently sent off.

Glover missed his spot-kick but converted the rebound.

Barnet midfielder Danny Hart scored a stunning late consolation for the hosts.

It was Glover Snr's last game in charge after being told by the club's board that he would be relieved of his managerial duties following today's result.

Vale's victory means Glover has led the team to 12 wins, eight draws and 19 defeats in 39 matches.

It also meant Vale finished their League Two campaign in 18th place on 48 points.

Glover's final team selection saw him make a trio of changes from the side that earned a creditable home draw against Wycombe last week.

Midfielder Paul Marshall, making his last loan appearance from Manchester City missed out after picking up a leg injury.

Marshall's place in central midfield was taken by Dave Howland.

Club captain Sam Stockley was still suffering the effects of undergoing a minor eye operation earlier in the week and was also sidelined.

Versatile defender Lee Collins switched from central defence to fill Stockley's right-back birth, while Luke Prosser was restored to the heart of the defence.

Steve Thompson dropped to the bench, leaving the way clear for Dodds to be recalled at left midfield.

Youth midfielder Anthony Malbon was drafted into the first-team squad for the first time. Malbon was voted as Mark Grew's youth player of the year at the recent players' awards ceremony.

Vale played downhill in the first half on Underhill's sloping pitch.

Dodds was the first to show, in the second minute, when he broke free but dragged his 16-yard drive wide of the near left-hand post.

Barnet gradually warmed to the task and applied heavy pressure just before the 10th-minute mark.

Vale keeper Chris Martin showed strong hands to keep out a well-struck angled effort from striker Luke Medley. From the resulting corner the ball fell to the far post for fellow striker Cliff Akurang. However, centre-half John McCombe was well placed to block his strike on goal from 12 yards.

The Valiants drew first blood in the 11th minute when the ball was fed into the feet of Dodds.

The 22-year-old drove forward a few yards and fired a precise low 20-yard shot into the bottom left-hand corner, just beyond the reach of keeper Ran Kadoch.

The hosts almost responded in the 17th minute when a free kick fell to the feet of Joe Devera. The full-back's shot from a central position was blocked. The loose ball fell to Medley but the striker's angled effort, from 10 yards, was parried to safety by Martin.

The game started to degenerate into the scrappy affair, although Vale weren't bothered as they seemed to be enjoying the mild conditions.

On 26 minutes, Vale midfielder Simon Richman was hauled down by Kenny Gillet. Dave Brammer swung over the free-kick from the right, which was headed wide at the far post by striker Glover.

Vale were producing impressive link-up play as the first half wore on. Brammer was anchoring the midfield well in organising and setting up play.

Richman came inside to gain possession and indulged in some nice one-touch stuff with the likes of Glover and Lawrie.

An excellent passing move led to left-back Paul Edwards drilling a dangerous 36th-minute cross in the path of Glover, but an alert Barnet defender flicked the ball to safety.

Dodds found more space on the edge of the box in the 20th minute. This time his wickedly deflected strike looped just over the bar.

With just minutes of the half remaining Dodds flashed a long-range volley wide of the right-hand post.

The final action of the first half saw Vale double their advantage when the ball was delivered into Barnet's box. Striker James Lawrie produced an excellent flick around the corner, allowing Glover to stab the ball past the onrushing Kadoch. As the ball rolled towards the goal-line it was illegally cleared by the hand of a desperate Ogogo.

Referee Roger East had no choice but to point to the spot before sending Ogogo for an early bath.

Glover stepped up from 12 yards and scored from close range after Kadoch dived low to his right to keep out his spot kick. Glover raced over to his dad, and boss, to celebrate and maybe to show a little family support to his old man as the clock ticked down on his seven-month reign.

Barnet started the second half in positive fashion as Medley, Hart and substitute Chris Birchall wasted half chances.

On 48 minutes, Martin took no chances in dabbing away an audacious lob from Akurang who struck the ball from the right wing.

On the hour-mark McCombe failed to clear Kadoch's long clearance. Akurang latched onto the loose ball only to scuff his shot well wide of the right-hand post.

Brammer gave a silly free-kick away outside Vale's box, but Richman did well to block Gillet's stinging set-piece before Dodds saw another 20-yarder fly wide.

Lawrie lashed the ball home from 12 yards on 70 minutes but the goal was ruled out for offside. It was the 18-year-old's

last action as he was substituted for Rob Taylor seconds later.

The game died out in the final 20 minutes, although Hart's ferocious 20-yard drive warmed the hands of Martin in the 85th minute.

Although, there was still time for 17-year-old Malbon to make his senior debut by replacing Richman.

With a minute remaining, Martin tipped over a 20-yard rasper from substitute Max Porter.

The season finished with a moment of quality when Barnet finally got on the scoresheet. A corner, taken from the right, fell to Hart on the edge on the box, and the midfielder rifled his shot into the top left-hand corner.
