Martin Tideswell: Vale's future, on and off the pitch, rests with Adams

BY anyone's standards, it's been a topsy-turvy start to the season, writes Martin Tideswell.

We got off to an absolute flier in both the league and the Carling Cup, only to be brought right back down to earth with a spanking at Premier League Fulham.

Then last Saturday the lads turned in a pretty tepid performance during which our midfield went absent for a large part of the second half.

Having said that, had we taken our chances we could have salvaged a point against Torquay.

Fortunately, we bounced back on Tuesday with a morale-boosting win over Rochdale in the "Paint Pot Trophy".

Crucially, our strike force of the Richards boys is gelling nicely and I can see them scoring 40 goals between them this season.

If that is supplemented by goals from other areas, then Vale will be top six come next May.

So much rests, of course, on the shoulders of manager Micky Adams.

We are so fortunate to have a no-nonsense gaffer who has had a galvanising effect on the whole club.

Whether I speak to supporters, players or board members, it seems we all agree Micky is doing a fine job.

For me, keeping the manager happy and in place is absolutely key to Vale's success in the short to medium term.

Sadly, the proposed Mike Newton investment saga hangs over Vale Park like a dark cloud.

I was very happy the board rejected Newton's offer, which would have resulted in him becoming chairman. I was also delighted he rejected the offer of a seat on the board.

Bill Bratt has now stepped down as chief executive, but will remain as chairman.

This is a good move. Bill's steady hand will remain on the tiller, but this move allows the club to appoint a new CEO – fresh blood with new ideas.

By the same token, the pro-Newton faction among supporters can no longer criticise Bill for taking a salary out of the club.

The moaners and downright nasty elements among fans who have used the Newton affair as yet another stick with which to beat the board will doubtless carry on sniping while condemning supporters like me.

Good luck to them.

I believe in evolution, not revolution and will continue to support the club in a positive fashion – along with the silent, sensible majority.

“Suki aka "LadyVale" as she posts on OVF is a born argumentative, narrow minded and sometimes stupid person who swears black is white on most topics on the OneValeFan Board. She picks on anyone that disagrees with anything she says. She must have a sad life i would imagine single middle aged spinster with a hatred for men. Ignore her rants on here, and she MIGHT go away.”

“Suki, I'll ask you once again as you have ignored my initial question - what exactly have I done to be "named and shamed" by you on this comment thread.

As you can see, I have used my real name to post and not hidden behind a pseudonym like your goodself. Why do you not have the courage of your convictions? Why are you frightened to disclose who you really are??”

“The majority of posters on this comment piece, are - unsurprisingly - the same people who are taking part in the whingeathon on OVF every day - Timothius, Twitters, Jimmy El Perro, Cheeky, Jacko 51. Fair play to them for having so much time to whip themselves up into a frenzy. The bottom line is...
    a) Mike Newton's proposal was rejected. Ha
    b) Bratt stepped down as CEO which means (as Tideswell says) you can't have a pop at him any longer for taking a salary out of the club
    c) If Newton was such a messiah-like figure how come only 200 odd people turned up to his rally? Simple fact is that everyone around me in Lorne Street thinks he's not right for Vale and wouldn't stick around and would lose us our best manager since Rudgey. We would all rather he b*ggered off, frankly and took his daft soundbites with him
    d) Nobody can possibly dispute that some of the people named above (regular OVF posters) spend an awful lot of their time slinging mud and very nasty personal insults towards other fellow Vale fans - which is indefensible in itself.”

    “Martin,

I object strongly to your inference that because I believe Port Vale should have accepted Newton's investment that that makes me 'a downright nasty element'.

Having supported the Vale for 54 years, sponsored the back of the club's shirts, and been an integral part of the Sproson Fund perhaps you might like to return the text I sent you last week and give me one single fact that can be referenced that makes Mike Newton an unacceptable investor.

You might also like to explain the contradiction in your statements over the past few years (as itemised below) and your current comment of a 'steady hand on the tiller' - we brew Titanic locally so that may explain it.

Also how can a company progress when the 'steady hand on the tiller' is Chairman of a totally disfunctional and incompetent Boardroom that is split assunder?

'Steady hand on the tiller' who told me personally that we would have been in Admin again this last winter if Harlequin had not made an emergency loan of £130,000.

'steady hand on the tiller' who is closing his ears to the warnings from the Vale's own financial consultant who is forecasting the money to run out in January.

Also if Mike Newton is not 'a fit and proper person' to invest a controlling interest in the club, how come the Board invited him to join?

If you really wanted to help Port Vale perhaps a question and answer interview with Mike Newton could feature as your next article and then you and the rest of the silent minority will wake up and smell the coffee..”

“Excellent comment there Mr Tim Barber, could not have put it better myself. I have come to the conclusion that this board are looking for a "donation" not investment as this would maintain the status quo. Also I would like to say to Mr Tideswell that this is an appalling article considering some of your comments highlighed on here over the past year or so.”

    “So,
Port Vale have got interested investment from Mike Newton, Earl Barrat Consortium, & Harlequin Property's, all of which are proposing to invest around about the same amount.
The current board are saying they don't want anyone running the club who has "not got the club at heart"
So why not test these investors out, and propose that they all invest their money together. which makes the investment 3 times bigger & is in the "interests of the club".
Whichever investor declines then we see who does not have the clubs interests at heart.
BUT the current board must be prepared to step aside,or is this to simple?????”

    “Is Suki Bill Bratt? Suki you have been presented with many facts on here but all you can come back with is personal abuse or some sort of sympathy vote. If Martin Tideswall has had a cancer scare I for one wish him a full and speedy recovery, I do not wish that evil illness on anyone. Having said that what has listing a number of factual points, that counter what Mr Tideswell has said, got to do with his illness and why should anyone feel ashamed? Your posts are laughable. For your information my name is Tim Barber and I post as Timothius on One Vale Fan and I will say anything I have posted on there, or here, to anyones face that includes Martin Tideswell, Bill Bratt etc. because it just happens to be true. Trouble is I would find it difficult to speak to you and your ilk because you hide behind pseudonyms both on here and OVF but you have the gall to call others out for it. If you want a debate stick to the facts available some of which are;
1.PVFC are about to announce massive losses despite achieving and bettering their previously announced break even crowd figures.
    2. PVFC have made major losses over the last 3 years, take a look at the accounts available on Companies House website it's all there in the public domain.
    3. The current CEO has overseen these losses so hasn't done a good job and would have been removed at most companies who had performed so badly, that isn't being personal it's just business.
    4. The current chairman has lied and held back information form his fellow directors and to the fanbase on a number of things, namely re proposed Investors of which Mike Newton is just one of many. He openly lied on Radio Stoke about parts of Mr Newton's offer, lies that were swiftly countered by Mr Newton. I personally think that Chairman and CEO who is prepared to do such a thing isn't fit for purpose, perhaps yuo don't mind lies, I do.
    5. PVFC have fantastic facilities which the present board take a lot of credit for helping to complete. However, these facilities are completely underused because of a lack of a funded full time professional commercial department. The club is, therefore, missing out on massive revenue opportunities that can ony benefit the club and the team on the pitch. The present board have no plans in place to rectify this situation, others have but aren't allowed the opportunity to do so, as Bill would say "we are where we are".
    6. A potential investor has just been turned away due to a list of childish reasons and any other investor will get the same treatment so how will we ever progress if these people are turned away? Some board members expect to keep their positions and control and give investors no control in return, this will never happen in the real world. Would you put £500k into the Vale without having a say on how it is spent? I wouldn't and I dare say no one else would. This is back to the days of Bill Bell's "you can invest but you aren't having any shares in return".
I could go on but it is pointless with people like yourself as you ignore the truth and keep posting your claptrap.

    Regards Tim Barber”

“How come the first post, which is just a list of quotes from tideswell's own articles, brought such a negative reaction from some? Can't deal with facts?”
