March on Stoke: 700 join protest over new council HQ
ALMOST 700 protesters took to the streets today to fight the building of a £40 million new civic headquarters.
The turnout was double the numbers predicted by organisers of the March on Stoke campaign.
The noisy placard-waving procession walked from the proposed site of the building in Hanley to the existing council offices in Stoke which will be closed.
Demonstrators - led by a huge banner in the shape of a white elephant - included people of all ages and political persuasions.

“I_Norris I believe we need to request our local MPs write to the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for London, Local Government and Planning, Brandon Lewis MP and submit a complaint on
behalf of their constituents
Thats a non starter then.
Labour council being reported by Labour MPs
Much as I would like to believeit would happen, I think not”

“I am no legal expert, but surely there has to be a way to at least get an inquiry into the running of Stoke council.
Any legal experts reading this?”

“I was a stagehand at concert halls and festivals for over 20 years, I know what a gathering off 700 looks like... that was way more than that!
The genie is out of the bottle. By any measure, yesterday was a resounding success!
It also reinforced Stokies' reputation for being some of the friendliest, good natured and humorous folk there are!”

“@Anon_mow_cop
You said:"the ballot box waits for them like an open grave."
Yes,it does. But by then the Ivory Palace will have been built and we will be saddled with the debt, regardless of who gets voted in.”

“How long will the people of Stoke-on-Trent sit and grumble about what is going on and not do anything about it. Its time to get up and have our say, its time that the council realized this is our city, this is our money and we aren't going to lie down and let them waste it. The city does need regeneration, it needs jobs to be created, growth in business and BETTER transport but it sure as hell doesn't need £50million being wasted on new council offices when there is nothing wrong with the ones they have. They talk about regenerating the city, how many buildings have been knocked down and the site just left because they ran out of money? How many council nursing homes have been closed down years ago and now stand empty and boarded up? The whole city is full of boarded up, unused buildings which they don't seem to have the money to do anything about, towns like tunstall, burslem and stoke are dying out, no money ever spent there, no parking, nothing to attract businesses. Then there's Hanley with its new £15 million bus station that doesn't even fit all the buses in it. But despite everything in the city the council still can spend £50 Million on themselves.”

“by pensioner46 -"Sarah Hill said his insistence to hold down a full-time job as a highly paid Research Chemist with a National Oil Company -whilst at the same time treating the role as Leader of the Council as a PART-TIME AFFAIR is something I was not aware of
There are a lot of people in this City without A job and here we are being told that Mr Pervez has two jobs." -pensioner46.
Not 'now here' .... but common knowledge, as revealed in the Sentinel (Wednesday, April 25, 2012)-which reported Cabinet Member Sarah Hill's challenge to Pervez's leadership.
Quote:-
"It means the council will hold a by-election in Springfields and Trent Vale to elect a replacement.
Aiming a parting shot at the leadership, Mrs Hill criticised Mr Pervez for maintaining a full-time job as well as the £44,000-a-year leader's role.
She also blasted the Labour group's policy of asking press officers to speak for cabinet members on non-political issues.
Mrs Hill said: "I had just had enough. I was never going to be able to work with Mohammed Pervez and felt if I was on the back benches I would be poison and it better that I leave.
"I always felt we should have a full-time leader and I had issues with the way we communicate with the press. I think I'm good at telling it as it is, whether it's good or bad.
"Colleagues have said 'what did you expect' and I understand what Pervez did, but he didn't have to do it. Maybe a stronger leader would have managed it differently.
"I do disagree with things, I do have other viewpoints and I do challenge things.
"The cabinet does need that and I think they will miss me more than I will miss them."
She served as the Labour group's chairman in Stoke-on-Trent before being elected in 2010, and held key cabinet positions overseeing service transformation and, later, finance.
Here is the story from April 2012.

“Still time if people counldnt make the protest to sign an epetition via the council website.
http://tinyurl.com/bsv2n7l
The petition is to stop all plans to relocate the civic centre. The CBD should go ahead without the £55m move only 22 years after the £30m move to the current centre. That £30m hasnt gone far if they move already. Not forgetting the 1973 Unity house built new, with the council as the tennant and demolished already.
Lets encourage the council to build the local economy and businesses instead. A regenerated economy would regenerate the city. Build businesses which make money, not new council offices which cost money.”

“Yes and next time , we will be holding all the aces, a card game where we have ran out of PATIENCE . Stick or Twist . A game of Pontoon but more like BUFFOON. We have just gone BUST.That is what we are fighting for,our future, our very existence, for we are on the brink of being fast becoming extinct . For a Labour Councillor to criticise where the meeting was held, at the Cenotaph, it was not fitting, or words to that effect. It was exactly the right place. the very people who lived and died for the rest of us to give us democracy and free speech. They would be PROUD OF US . Principals that the Labour Party was founded on, Looking after the not so privileged in life.
BUT NOT NOW. LOOK AFTER No1 to hell with the rest of us. Perverse and some of his mob won't be here to see the aftermath of the fallout . They will be long gone. For us to pick up the pieces . So even though he thinks the cards are stacked against us, everyone turn up on Thursday
It will be OUT OUT OUT to begin with, then it will be IN IN IN INSIDE to end with . Finish up with FULL HOUSE . With cards up our sleeve. As for the crib, someone has fallen out of his cot. He needs to change his nappy and climb back in and stick his dummy back in, i won;t say where, but we all can guess. There seems to be alot coming out. JOKER...”
