A man has been jailed today after a shopkeeper stopped him robbing her shop in Penkridge with a mop.

Benjamin Chambers, 20, of Old Coach Road, Bishops Wood, was sentenced today for a raid on the Popins Pantry in Penkridge in August 2010.

He demanded cash from the 58-year-old shop keeper but fled empty handed after she chased him out with a mop.

He was sentenced to six years for the attempt robbery and three years for the possession of an imitation firearm, to run concurrently.

DC Marc Bailey, the investigating officer, said: “This was a shocking crime where the defendant threatened and intimidated the victim. Her bravery in the face of danger is admirable. We welcome the sentence handed to the defendant today.”

“Shoorly the poor desperate wobber must be a victim of evil Tory class warfare and social deprivation, and has clearly had his human rights infringed. He should be paid compensation and get a bigger giro and a better council house to make sure he doesn't feel the need to go out on the wob again. Or have to wear that unbecoming troglodyte "gangsta" gear.

In America shopkeepers (especially Korean ones) will happily put a bullet in the heads of thieves - "you steal, you die!" - and quite right too! But in nanny-state Britain, ordinary people aren't allowed to defend themselves. Apparently it would not be conducive to public order. Yeah right.”
