This is Staffordshire

Jean Johnston is busy preparing for the April wedding of her daughter, Sarah. As a thank you, the bride-to-be decided to nominate her 59-year-old mum, who is from Gwenys Crescent, in Blurton, for a Sentinelle makeover

The hair

Rachel Anna Williamson, stylist at Hedrush in Hanley, did Jean's hair.

Rachel says: "Jean previously had no colour on her hair and she told me when she arrived at the salon that she would prefer a low-maintenance style. We opted for a dark, warm shade to complement her skin tone and give her style a fuller look. I then scattered some golden lights through her hair to give it texture and shine. For the cut, we went for a soft, textured crop that Jean would be able to recreate at home and kept the fringe short and soft."

COST: Jean's cut and colour would have cost £60.80 but the salon is currently offering a promotion on cut and colours until the end of January.

The make-up

Rachel Nelson, beauty therapist at Salon VIP in Hanley, did Jean's make-up.

"We use the RVB range at the salon," says Rachel. "Jean doesn't wear make-up and her skin is naturally quite pale. I didn't want to apply a foundation that was too dark and we both wanted to create a subtle look that Jean could wear during the day. I started off by applying a light foundation which I set with a powder. Then I added blusher to create definition in her face. I applied a dark brown shade of eyeshadow to her lids to make her eyes stand out but not too dramatically, and added some black pencil eyeliner inside the eyes and some black mascara. We finished off with a pale gloss on her lips."

COST: Jean's makeover at Salon VIP would have cost £11.

The clothes

Sophie Ruszkowski, sales assistant at Marks & Spencer in Hanley, put together Jean's outfit.

Sophie says: "Jean told me she wasn't used to shopping a lot so we had a look through the store together to get some ideas.

"We picked out the coat, which costs £85, to add a splash of colour and chose the top, which is £29.50 to continue the vibrant theme. The flat shoes, priced at £19.50, are practical and stylish and we finished off with a pair of beige trousers costing £15. I accessorised her outfit with a black bangle, which cost £9.50 and a black bag priced at £29.50. I'm really pleased with the look we gave her and the colours looked great against her skin."

The verdict

Jean says: "When I went in to the hairdressers, we talked through what I wanted and although it isn't a colour I would have chosen, I really like how Rachel has styled it and it matches my skin tone. I don't usually wear make-up but I like it because it's really subtle. As for the clothes, again the outfit isn't something I would normally choose but it looked really nice when I put it all together. I've had a great day and everybody was so nice and friendly to me."
