Stoke City 1,  West Brom 2

Jerome (86)   Morrison (35), Dorrans (91)

Martin Spinks reports from the Britannia Stadium

SO now it's just two defeats for Stoke in their last 29 league meetings against Albion after being beaten by an injury-time free-kick here at a blustery Britannia this afternoon.

Stoke, never at their best, appeared to have salvaged a point when Cameron Jerome headed them level in the 86th minute after Jon Walters had missed a penalty 14 minutes earlier.

But Albion, for once, had the last laugh when Graham Dorrans pinged home a free-kick past a bemused Stoke defence in stoppage time.

It was a bitter pill for City fans reared on much better against the Baggies, but bigger battles lie ahead this season.

Albion fashioned the only two chances in a first quarter dominated more by the wind than either of the two teams.

The game was only four minutes old when a long ball over the top was halted on the breeze to confound Jonathan Woodgate and leave Jerome Thomas homing in on goal, but Thomas Sorensen got his angles right to block with his boot.

Nicky Shorey then weaved his way deep into enemy territory before seeing Albion's eventual cross dummied for Simon Cox to lazily scuff his shot a mile off target.

Morrison came much closer after dispossessing Marc Wilson near half-way in the 26th minute, however, but his fierce shot on the run was brilliantly pushed onto his bar by the acrobatic Sorensen.

Stoke, with Ryan Shotton replacing Wilson Palacios their only change this afternoon, had the wind at their back but rarely threatened first half.

The breeze did help them in the 23rd minute when Woodgate's long clearance embarrassed Albion's two centre halves to leave Walters through, but Gareth McAuley recovered his ground superbly to block the Stoke striker's eventual shot before it could trouble Ben Foster.

The opening period was meandering peacefully enough towards a goalless conclusion when disaster then struck Stoke and Sorensen in the 35th minute.

Alarm bells were ringing when MORRISON picked up in space just inside the Stoke half and then strode goalwards unimpeded.

But what followed drew loud gasps as Sorensen totally misjudged a slightly swerving shot from 20 yards by leaning low to his right to gather… a split second before the ball beat his outstretched foot to his left.

 Half-time:  Stoke City 0, West Brom 1.

Stoke could have been dead and buried within six minutes of the restart as Robert Huth blocked Marc-Antoine Fortune's goalbound effort from a Graham Dorrans cross, while 60 seconds later that man Morrison controlled on his thigh before hooking a fine shot against Sorensen's right-hand post.

No wonder Jermaine Pennant was summoned soon after to replace Woodgate as Shotton dropped to right back.

Pennant immediately enlivened the home side as Peter Crouch drove well wide and Shotton only narrowly wide.

It could have been curtains soon after  when Foster's long clearance left Cox clean through, but Sorensen kept his nerve to close his man down and block his eventual shot.

Stoke began exerting pressure, without chances, until being thrown the lifeline of a 72nd minute penalty when McAuley was harshly adjudged to have fouled Walters when clearly reaching the ball first.

But Stoke's luck deserted them when Walters hammered his penalty down the middle and Foster cleared with his legs as he dived right.

City were still licking their wounds when Albion's next incursion ended with Morrison sweeping a yard wide with a snapshot from Huth's headed clearance.

Stoke fans were rapidly losing hope entering the final 10 minutes as Cameron Jerome was chucked on for a final flourish.

A final flourish that took a long time in coming – but duly arrived as Pennant played his part magnificently.

For it was Pennant winning a free-kick out on the right that he then floated into the danger zone for JEROME to glance his header inside the far post in front of a joyous Boothen.

But the drama wasn't finished there.

For DORRANS pinged a low free-kick through a criss-cross of legs and past Sorensen's unsighted dive to find the keeper's bottom left- hand corner in the first of three added minutes.

“Exlongtonian, there is no way that I think people who don't agree with me are all Morons and there is no way I look down on people who can't go to all the games. What get's right on my wick is the people who seem to never have a good word for the team they claim to love. Having a go at anything to do with Stoke does not come easy to me, I'm totally biased and I don't easily stomach others having a go either. It's pretty much instinctive to have a go back, I can't help it as I've done it all my life. It's called being a supporter. It's kind of like someone having a go at your wife, you do it yourself but God help anyone else who does it. The venom with which some on here attack Stoke at every opportunity for me does not suggest they are real supporters and when the most venomous attacks just come from TV viewers it just makes me laugh. I watched Cardiff on TV last night so does that mean I support Cardiff, like hell it does.”

“I now assume davejjohnson, that the comment was meant to suggest that you and I are the same person, explaining a comment directed to me last week, that somebody would go to the trouble of creating an alias to have a go at the moaners? in which case I could not agree more with your post 24th Jan 12.15am At least I now know who you are and you know who I am!! and sf once again your comments make no sense, I am to calm down and supposedly stop making the comments that you in the same post say is all that you do on this site! UNDERSTND THE FOLLOWING PLEASE If i disagree with what you say, I will tell you so - is this in line with your do not react 'gang' from last night? what a loser you really are!”

“Don't normally come on this site but i've been reading all the debates over the past few weeks (laughing my balls off at Soccerfoot and Davej go at it lol) so i thought as a stokie i'll comment.

Personally i would not get rid of TP yet. This is not to say that i dont think his tactics (especially against WB last week) are sometimes crazy. Rory Delap has been a good servant to the club and without his throws survival would have been alot harder in the first two seasons, bit its 2012 now and IT DONT WORK TONY!!!!!!! when he trots over the length of the pitch i feel embarassed because the away fans are laughing at us. I bang on about Woodgate on the oatcake so im not gonna start here, only to say i do not rate him at all at prem level. Why do people say Shotton is one for the future, hes about 23-24 aint he?!? Granted he wasn't fully fit vs WB but when fit he certainly aint no winger- get Jermaine on. The stick Jon Walters has had baffles me. Its not his fault he gets played every game. He's looks nackered atm, so why the hell doesn't he give Jerome or Ric a run out. Personally i'd like to see Fuller and Jerome rip Derby apart but i've been going Stoke long enough to know that definitely will not happen.”

“Davejjohnson, Just because some of us can't actually get to games, dosn't make us any less passionate about our club than you!!! We support in other ways. Personally, I pay a fairly hefty satelite TV subscription, of which a good part goes back to the premier league. I also buy merchandise on line, and have a selection of Stoke shirts etc. So pull ya head in a bit, and take ya rose coloured glasses off, and actually admit that what Pulis is doing to our club is C..P. and anyone who dosn't agree with you is a Moron!!”

“This site gets more pathetic by the day, just a bunch of moaners. There's only a few real supporters that post on here. Win lose or draw there's half of you who have barely ever had a decent word to say about Stoke. Supporters my ar*e.”

“wheatear ? why do we vent our frustrations in public ?? you mean on a site like this one made specifically for that purpose ?? where else do we do it ? Sites like this one are exactly where fans can come and discuss their views without fear and reprisal from foul mouth bullies who act that way because they dont like what they hear. Trust me, i have take on such bullies personally on this very site. We dont like losing games(especially at home) plain and simple, but we all know we will lose plenty of them. Its how we played most of the people on here seem more upset with, not so much we lost and the fact we have won 1 game out of the last 6. Hardly cause for celebration.
    Calm down”

“Obama4prez you obviously expect us to be a selling club we are not anymore, which is why the players he has bought in have NOT been sold! My God I can just imagine the comments from people like you if we HAD made profit and sold our best players, instead Etherington, Pennant, Shawcross, Huth, Walters, Whelan, Wilson, Whitehead, and not forgetting Sorenson have all done better at Stoke than they did elsewhere, with Palasios, Crouch, Jerome, Marshall and Begovic still to show their best, as to the way we play, if you don't like being where we are now, what do you want? we have misfired at home lately and you and your ilk cannot stay supportive? do you think genuine supporters are not concerned when it goes badly? of course we are! do you think your negativity does any good? of course it does not!! When our play comes together we are great to watch and if you do not or cannot see that then you do not watch us very often. Sure we all want to watch our team play like Barcelona, but by doing what TP has achieved, he has broken the mould - look at how many other teams have tried to 'play' their way in the Prem and failed? Read Four Four Two this month and look at where those very same teams are now? Only the record books will show the true story in the fullness of time, but you cannot (sorry SHOULD not) knock what has been achieved so far. My point and what I cannot either understand or accept from 'Holier than thou' type comments is what possible good do you think it achieves other than you venting your own frustrations? We all have them, but why oh why do you have to give vent in public - support the team for God's sake, rather than feed the negative stance that this site generates!!!”

“Mr Wheatear - Just look at the Pulis buy/sell record - how many players has he brought in since we have been in the Prem that he has sold and actually made money on - I'm struggling to find ONE - enlighten me if you would please. Mr Coates must have money to burn or he surely must suffer from the same brand of myopia as Pulis. You can't for the Life of me say that the brand of football Stoke play week-in and week-out is Entertainment. Please tell me how this development curve is progressing after 4 years in the Prem - sure we lie 8th in the League but that could be quite misleading as we have some very tough matches to come over the next few weeks - so lets check back in a months time. But my point is NOT the fact we lost it is the manner in which we play - our style has no future in the premier league - we dont control games as we should and dictate the pace and tempo because our style is not condusive to that under Pulis. We are - IMO - not getting the best out of our current squad of players. I hope I am proved wrong and we somehow beat Valencia at home and maybe draw away - can't see it personally because the way we play is set up for a good hiding against a really slick football team with a ruthless streak infront of goal. It's coming to a ground somewhere soon - I hope it's not at the Brit.”
