THE A500 was closed in both directions for hours early today after a collision involving two HGVs and a police dog van.

The first lorry hit the central reservation near Stoke City's old ground at 2.50am and jack-knifed sending its contents into the opposite carriageway where the other two vehicles were hit.

Its female driver was taken to the University Hospital of North Staffordshire with lower back pain.

The southbound carriageway re-opened three hours later but the northbound was still sealed off during the morning rush hour.

In a separate crash at 8am, two vans collided on the D-road near the Sainsbury's distribution centre to add to the traffic chaos.

“William, Newcastle. You call all lorry drivers brain dead bullies, are you actually aware of what you have to do on an hgv driving test before they will pass you. Also, next time you go to the supermarket because your belly wants filing, just think on how it got there. These drivers are out in all weather conditions, probably while you are still flat on your back in bed. Hope all involved are ok.”

“Brian, stoke, well if you believe your own argument then they are unsafe and shouldn't be on the road, and jack knifing is cause by speed and sudden braking.”

“Take a minute to think of the recent weather conditions. The wind has been very high over the last couple of days, I was travvelling along the A500 in my car and was struggling to keep it in a straight line as the wind gusted. This would by greatly increased with a high sided vehicle. And for everyone information it is very easy to 'jack knife' an articulated vehicle, the trailer plus the load wieghs far mor that the tractor unit. In the vent of sudden braking the momentum of the trailer easily means it can swing around past the braking tractor unit (jack knifeing). And before I get corrected that trailor units have beakes also, rear brakes are alot less effective as the sudden weight transfer means the rear brakes lock-up and become ineffective.
All you armchair drivers should try driving a HGV instead of commenting on those that do. I have and its harder than it looks.”
