Long-serving parishioner honoured with papal medal
COMMUNITY stalwart James Ward has dedicated four decades to serving the church, courts and amateur dramatics.
The 71-year-old has given up his free time for many organisations including Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Hanley, since moving to North Staffordshire in 1971.

And yesterday, Bishop David McGough presented him with the Benemerenti award from the Pope during mass.
The medal recognises those who exhibit "long and exceptional service" to the Catholic church, their families and the community.
Mr Ward, who is originally from York but now lives in West Avenue, Newcastle, is both the organist and choirmaster at Sacred Heart.
The grandfather-of-one, who was also the organist at St Mary's Church, Leek, for four years, said: "I've always loved music and amateur dramatics.
"I started playing the organ 46 years ago and before that I had played the piano accordion.
"It's a privileged post to be the organist in a church because you work closely with the priest to prepare the service. I've worked with seven parish priests at Sacred Heart."
One of Mr Ward's biggest roles is to organise Sacred Heart's annual carol service which has, over the years, become Stoke-on-Trent's civic carol celebration, attended by the city's Lord Mayor.
He said: "The carol service is the highlight of the year for me because I conduct the whole thing.
"It brings together the Salvation Army band and choirs.
"I missed a couple of carol concerts due to ill health, so this year will be my 30th.
"It's something to aim for.
"I still get a kick from conducting the music at such an important service, and it gives me a great sense of satisfaction."
Mr Ward has also served as a Justice of the Peace for more than 20 years and is a former president of Newcastle Players.
He was also conductor and choirmaster at the Victoria Hall for two large masses in 2000 and 2004
Sacred Heart's Father Peter Weatherby has now nominated Mr Ward for a Sentinel Our Heroes award in the volunteer of the year category.
He said: "Jim has given a great service to this church and the community and he is cherished by so many people.
"As well as playing the organ on Sundays, he does all the weddings and funerals.
"He started the annual carol service in 1979 and has been doing it ever since.
"And he has been very involved in the community in other roles, he certainly deserves the recognition."
