MADAM , – If you saw the special Christmas edition of Cranford starring Dame Judi Dench on the BBC a couple of years ago, you may well recognise Bellerophon as she had a role in the two-part special.

As a locomotive now well cared for by the Vintage Carriage Trust and the Foxfield Steam Railway, she is one of the oldest steam locomotives working anywhere in the world.

  1. Bellerophon, now at Foxfield.

Built in 1874 by the Haydock Foundry to a design by Josiah Evans, she was one of six similar engines employed at the Haydock Collieries in Lancashire. Built originally without a cab, one was added in 1880 in order to afford some protection to her crew from the elements.

She was eventually withdrawn from service by the NCB and sold on to the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway in 1966. Ownership transferred to the Vintage Carriage Trust, which, wishing to see Bellerophon in an authentic colliery location, placed the loco on long-term loan to the Foxfield Railway, where she can be viewed in working order.
