WINTER is tough on our vehicles, so spring is the time to give them some tender loving care.

Here we identify some areas on your car that your local garage, dealer, tyre depot and bodyshop can help you look after...

On the outside you need to look at the bodywork and alloy wheels. The damp winter atmosphere and road salt plays havoc and it is best to act now before corrosion gets a real hold.

Ensure that your vehicle is washed to remove residual salt from body and paintwork. Some car washes also provide an under body and wheel wash too.

Check tyre pressures. They expand when hot so check them first thing in the morning.

Tread depth should be the legal minimum of 1.6mm and as you are checking the pressures, look for any dangerous bulges or cuts where the tyre might have been pinched against a kerb.

Under the bonnet, check all the fluid levels, especially the radiator, as summer temperatures increase the risk of overheating.

Also, check that there is enough oil in your car's engine. Oil starvation only ends one way: with an expensive repair bill.

Inside the car, inspect all external lights and check that the electrics are working – windows, interior light, warning lights, sunroof.

Not regularly servicing the air conditioning system could mean that it fails in the heat of the summer and might allow mould to grow in it.

Most garages can provide vehicle air-conditioning maintenance, so ensure that your vehicle's system is working efficiently in time for the arrival of the summer.

Monitor your mileage. Is a service due? If in doubt, ask a local garage.

Why not get the professional technicians at your local garage check your vehicle over for you? After all, it'll bring you peace of mind and help to keep you mobile.
