Landlords told to check ID of young drinkers
PUBLICANS have been reminded to ask for proof of identity from young drinkers.
The plea was made by licensing officials after routine visits to three Leek pubs last week. The officers found that two of the businesses were not keeping up-to-date records of when they had requested ID and when sales had been refused.

BACKING: Councillor Gill Burton.
Councillor Gill Burton, portfolio holder for communities at Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, said: "One of our priorities is to reduce the risks that young people expose themselves to, and this includes preventing underage drinking.
"This is why we are behind the national Challenge 21 campaign that asks licensees to request proof of identity from anyone who appears to be under 21.
"We know that the vast majority of licence holders are backing the initiative. However, it is important that they protect themselves by keeping a log of every occasion when they request ID."
The visits were made by the district council, Staffordshire County Council trading standards, Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, and Staffordshire Police.
Inspector Lee Crowther, Leek and Biddulph Neighbourhood Policing Unit Commander, said: "We know the Challenge 21 scheme works and we urge licensees to ensure they keep their records up to date."
