Knock-on effects of Hanley move
IT would appear the controversial move by Stoke-on-Trent City Council to Hanley, and the proposed new shopping development and cinema isn't just going to have a detrimental impact on Stoke, but also Newcastle town centre.
A number of traders have heard rumours that should the new Vue cinema be built in Hanley, the existing one in Newcastle may close.
Not only would this inconvenience the many who use the cinema from Newcastle, the south of the city, the Market Drayton area and south Cheshire, it would also have a dramatic knock-on effect on footfall in Newcastle.
The various eating establishments close to the cinema would no doubt close, drastically lowering income coming into the town.

Couple this with the recent closure of the Burton store, a dress shop opposite and the distinct possibility of Argos closing and we appear to be looking at a ghost town in the not-too-distant future.
Newcastle is slowly being enveloped by pound shops and charity shops.
There is also a worrying number of empty units, in fact, some in the Vue arcade have never been occupied. The council needs to act.
There must be many farm shops, craftspeople and small businesses who could be enticed into the town by a peppercorn rent.Surely some rental income is better than none?
