"I wasn't sure what the job entailed but it looked interesting and varied and it certainly is.

"I don't think I will be here in another 25 years but I do enjoy it. It's very rewarding because we are here to help people."

Mrs Thacker was praised for her commitment at a meeting of the council's general purpose committee.

She was also handed a bunch of flowers.

Councillor Kevin Jackson said: "Twenty-five years is a long time in this job.

"She has had to deal with many difficult choices.

"I do think that we are really blessed in this town council."

“I'd just like to make a correction to this article. I am NOT and never have been a councillor ~ I am the Chief Officer to Biddulph Town Council (appointed 4 January 1988) and before that I was a teacher. At the meeting the Town Crier gave a proclamation and the Mayor presented me with a framed long-service certificate, a copy of the proclamation, a gift voucher and flowers. Three councillors then said lovely things & I was very touched by everyone's thoughfulness. (I was a bit shocked & speechless ~ very unusual!!)”
