A JAKE Avery strike proved the difference as battling Juniors reinforced their claim for a top-three finish with a narrow win over Hilton Harriers.

Chances arrived thick and fast at both ends early on. Lone striker Will Hulme had numerous opportunities cut out by the strong Hilton defence and neither side was able to break the deadlock before half-time.

Solie Victory-Daly was then introduced with Avery pushed into a more familiar position up front and Uttoxeter started to control the game from the restart. Atherton and Victory-Daly had numerous chances with Atherton's best effort crashing against the post.

Five minutes into the second half, Avery ran clear of the Hilton defence. But with just the keeper to beat, Hilton's stopper dived at Avery's feet and intercepted the ball. Then, with 10 minutes left, Avery picked the ball up from halfway and outran the Hilton defence before smashing in an unstoppable shot.

Luke Jones was then brought on. The quick midfielder slotted in down the right wing and helped Uttoxeter maintain possession up to the final whistle.

Manager Mark Parkes said: "After last week's heavy defeat to the leaders, some of the players had lost a bit of confidence.

"I told them from the start to go out enjoy the game and give 110 per cent.

"Each player went out and played with passion and determination to get this result and it's down to their hard work throughout the season."
