EIGHT years ago accountant John Belfield turned his back on a lifetime in industry to join the voluntary sector.

In his own words he wanted to "give something back" to society, and he now helps dozens of community and voluntary groups around Stoke-on-Trent as business adviser for Voluntary Action Stoke-on-Trent (Vast).

The 60-year-old, pictured, has become well-known around the city for his dedication, and while he modestly downplays his own role within Vast, it has been his support which has helped many groups get off the ground.

Kevin Healy is chairman of Staffordshire Adult Autistic Society, one of the groups which has benefited from John's assistance.

He has nominated John in the Charity Champion category of The Sentinel's Our Heroes awards, on behalf of all the groups he has helped.

Kevin, aged 35, of Newcastle, said: "At Vast's conference last year two different residents' groups got up on stage and said that if it hadn't been for John, they wouldn't be where they were today. One woman in her 60s was nearly in tears as she thanked him.

"He's helped me a lot with the two charities I've been involved with, putting our business plan together and helping us secure funding."

John started working for Vast as a community accountant in 2001.

The 60-year-old, of Trafford Close, Leek, said: "I've had the privilege of meeting so many people who are making such a fantastic difference.

"That's where I get my motivation."
