Joan Walley MP: Weather predictions
LAST week the Met Office published its UK Climate Projections 2009,
predicting what is likely to happen
over the coming century.
The results are worrying.
Even if drastic action is taken the climate will warm up,
the only question is by how much and how quickly.
The UKCP09
projections map out possible scenarios
ranging from best case to worst.
All paint a picture of a very different UK from what we know now with soaring summer temperatures and less rainfall.
The projections are aimed at helping industries, organisations and the government make long term decisions. Likewise I want to see tackling climate change a priority for this constituency.
The Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change said that the projections formed part of a five point plan to tackle climate change.
He also made an announcement on carbon capture and storage (CCS).
This is a technology that can be fitted to coal fired power stations to capture the carbon
and store it underground. If proven to be viable it could be crucial as it allows the world to continue burning coal without polluting the atmosphere.
