Izaak Walton Bar and Grill, Cresswell: Restaurant review
IF you fancy a quality Christmas dinner and the chance to eat out in the city centre, this Hanley establishment is well worth a visit.
If you’re unsure of what to expect, take a look at the pub’s website and get an idea of what is on offer and the prices of dishes.
Inside, the decor of Victoria On The Square in both the bar area and restaurant section is warm and welcoming, and there is a good selection of wines and beers on offer.
Even if it’s a busy Saturday evening, you’ll find the bar and waiting staff professional and unobtrusive, and they’ll waste no time in showing you to your table.

If you’re feeling festive, choose from the Christmas menu, which is priced at £24.95 each.
You might opt for the cranberry and stilton wantons, which are very crispy and hot, with just the right amount of filling.
Or what about the creamy garlic mushrooms, described by one diner as “amazing”?
If you’ve ordered this starter before, you’ll know it can be served a bit ‘soupy’, but Victoria On The Square get it spot on.
For the main course, dishes include salmon in white wine and chive sauce, which is cooked beautifully.
It’s a fair-sized fillet of salmon and it’s thick and very moist. Or there’s the festive turkey – also very moist – which comes with a Yorkshire pudding and stuffing. Both dishes are also served with large roast potatoes, a platter of seasonal vegetables and a jug of gravy.
The food here is piping hot, so that even if you return to your leftovers after a natter, they’ll still be tasty.
And if you’re filled to the brim, you’d be mad not to finish the meal with a sweet treat. How about Christmas pudding for dessert?
Here you are guaranteed excellent service and the waiting staff have just the right mix of attentiveness and service to make you feel at home.
Even if you’re visiting at this busy time of year, you won’t feel hurried.
Not only are the meals and service to be highly recommended, the venue is also ideal for theatre-goers and Hanley shoppers alike, as Victoria On The Square sits so close to the town centre and both The Regent Theatre and Victoria Hall.
These factors, combined with its easy relaxed vibe, will surely mean a return in the New Year, perhaps to indulge in the Sunday lunch or for a meal after a busy day at the sales?
Why not pick up a menu... The Victoria On The Square two main meals for £9 menu includes duck and port pate, followed by pork in peppercorn sauce.
