TEENAGE inmate Thomas Deakin inflicted one of the scariest attacks a prison officer had ever seen.

Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court was told yesterday the 17-year-old was a prisoner at Werrington Young Offenders' Institution when he attacked another inmate with a pool cue.

Prosecutor Robert Price said: "Blows were delivered with considerable force on three or four occasions, contacting with the back of the victim's head."

The victim suffered a three-inch cut to his head and bruising on his back.

Mr Price said one prison officer, Sylvia Warrilow, said it was "one of the scariest assaults she had witnessed in 20 years in the job".

Deakin, of Lawnswood, Telford, pleaded guilty to unlawful wounding.

Judge Paul Glenn sentenced the teenager to 12 months' detention and training.
