THE world's last traditional oatcake shop is to close after a four-year campaign to save it from the bulldozers.

Owner Glenn Fowler will shut the Hole in the Wall, in Hanley, next month after selling up to Stoke-on-Trent City Council.

Oatcakes have been served to customers through the front window of the 115-year-old end terrace since the 1920s, but it is now expected to be demolished.

Mr Fowler had been holding out for a move to a new business unit nearby.

But that has never materialised and the shop will close on Sunday, March 25.

It is not known how much Mr Fowler will receive for the Waterloo Street business.

Four staff have been given their notice. Mr Fowler's wife Sue also works there and will retire with him.

The 60-year-old, of Leek Road, Abbey Hulton, who has run the business for 29 years, said: "It will be heart-breaking to leave, but I feel it's time for a break.

"It could take another two years to get a new build and I would be too old by then.

"All I ever asked for was to be kept in the community. People come from all over the city and it is the customers who have kept us going."

Government agency Renew North Staffordshire had spent around £22 million buying properties in Hanley's City Waterside between 2006 and 2010. Just nine of the 178 properties, including the Hole in the Wall, are still standing.

More than 5,000 people signed a petition to save the building after news of the planned demolition emerged in January 2008.

Customer Mary Mayer, aged 75, of Norbury Avenue, Milton, said: "I wouldn't have oatcakes from anywhere else. Why anyone thinks it is a good idea to close a place like this is beyond me. It's a piece of history."

Father-of-two Danny Ryan, aged 50, who runs Hiccups newsagent and off licence, opposite the Hole in the Wall, said: "It feels as if we are being frozen out."

Councillor Ruth Rosenau, cabinet member for regeneration, said: "There have been plenty of discussions with Mr Fowler. We thank him for contributing so much over the last quarter of a century and more."

Demolition of oatcake shop is 'ripping the heart out of the community'

“I was born quite close to the shop some 50 odd years ago and as a Lad visited there to fetch the Oatcakes for Mum and Dad. Then as a Copper on my way off nights would collect them again to take home for me and some for my Mum and Dad who then had moved out of the area. You know how they have the Tavern in Liverpool and that remains well this could be a Tourist attraction just the same. Council look outside the box.”

“Everything that could be said about our wrecking ball council and its associates has been said, but can I just summarise it all? Inept, uncaring, bureacratic cretins. In most other places that value their heritage, an important piece of history like this would have been cherished, valued and been protected by a preservation order on it but oh no, not this council. They just like demolishing things, spending and wasting money like water, riding rough-shod over the wishes of the population, stifling discussion and debate in our democratic chambers, building hideous new buildings and then giving themselves a jolly good pat on the back. Job well done eh chaps? And oh, can I have a new assistant please? Best of luck to Glenn and Sue and thank you for making a stand.”

“My wife buys from the hole in the wall and its been the best oatcakes maker bar non for years. The chap who runs it has always had good banter with my wife as he is a vale fan and we are Stoke fans and we are going to miss this chap and his fantastic oatcakes. Why can't the council offer him a new place at a reduced rent until he gets going. It really is a business worth saving and if not another pottery's era comes to a sad end. what ever happen I would like to wish you all the best Glenn.”

“Its sad for Glyn agreed when you have had a business for so long. That being said, my family's oatcake shop, TJ's Oatcakes, Leek Road, Joiners Square offer the same to the community with customers being on a first name basis popping in for a chat even when they do not want anything! We gladly welcome any of The Hole in The Wall customers in the future who will also be treated in the same way as all our current customers, our motto is 'You are a stranger here but once' which says it all.

There are not many places around that give you good old fashioned traditional service and prepared to chat as long as you like with them which is a shame in this age, but we do take the time to listen to our customers with good old fashioned service and a smile.”

“Surely there is a terrace house elsewhere where the shop can be moved to or a unit in the centre of town- please photograph this place and donate the signs and history of it to the museum, I will try and preserve it in some way in the future, but it is sad, i understand it having to go for the future of the city (if it ever materialises) but surely the shop could have been moved somewhere else to keep it going, we have terrace houses coming out of our ears”

“I know both Glenn and Sue well, they are, and have been part of the community for a long time doing things that have benefited others. They are good honest people that want what is best for the community. They have been a big part of the community group and have tried to change things for the better. They do not live in the area but you would not know that from the amount of time and effort that they put into projects and meetings etc.
The issue that I have with Renew is that it was always going to fail because they had a plan of what they wanted to knock down based on land value. If you take a look at the original documents for the area you will see that it is cut into sections that have different value both in money and development value. Bucknall road houses just happened to be a section on their own. The part that the oakcake shop is in also had its own section, simply because it was close to the canal (higher value land).
The idea behind Renew was a good one the only issue was that Stoke on Trent council got their hands on it. They care more about looking after themselves than they do about the people that live there. I have lost my home and now it seems I have lost my favourite Oakcake shop.
I will miss the banter that they have, they spoke to the customer and took an interest in everyone's life. They would remember all the customers and speak to them like an old friend (which I suppose they were). This is the history of local shops. Real people, real lives.”

“You get the impression correctly, because I do. That's not altogether fair, they do occasionally get some things right, but not often. Their c*ck-ups and white elephants litter the place. I've lived here all my life and it's always been the same. Even members of the local Liebore who I know think the Council is rubbish - never any genuine opposition, one party state in all but name, divided in on itself, and for all that it's a "city" council and supposedly "unified" it's still tribalistic and parochial. When you've lived around here for long enough you'll understand why so many people hate it but are completely apathetic about doing anything about it.”
