THE daughter of a devoted wife believes her mother's remarkable selflessness should be an inspiration to everyone.

Cynthia Hughes has been nominated in the Adult Carer Of The Year category in The Sentinel's Our Heroes awards by her daughter Claire Deakin.

Cynthia has been her husband Harry's main carer since 2005, when three major strokes left him paralysed and totally dependent on others.

Despite suffering from angina herself, Cynthia hardly ever leaves her 59-year-old husband's side, seeing to all his needs all day, every day.

Claire, aged 23, of Hanley, said: “She does everything for my dad. She does physio with him to try to get him walking again, she prepares all his meals. She never leaves him.

“Even though she cares for him 24 hours a day, she never moans or complains about it. She just takes her wedding vows very seriously.

“She's not in the best of health herself either, so I take care of her, and she takes care of my dad. She's really an inspirational woman.”

Last year, Cynthia also acted as a carer for her husband's friend, Ralph Allsopp, after he was diagnosed with stomach cancer.

But the 54-year-old, of Eaves Lane, Bucknall, remains modest about her selfless devotion to others.

Cynthia said: “I don't think what I'm doing is anything special really. I don't really think about it at all, I just get on with it.”

Earlier this year Cynthia became the Wolstanton-based Castle Comfort Centre first ever carer of the year, after being secretly nominated by Claire. The judges, who included Coronation Street star Bill Roache, were bowled over by Cynthia's caring attitude.
